Northern Lower Michigan
I got a Masterbuilt Sportsman Elite for Christmas. I have never used a smoker and this seems like a good place to learn. I live in northern Michigan so venison, turkey, salmon, and steelhead are some of the meats that I am going to try. I look forward to hearing from experienced smokers on the best recipes, tips, and tactics. I can't wait to get started. I have two teenage boys and all three of us shot a buck this year so my first attempt at smoking will probably be venison.

Welcome to SMF.

You will enjoy That masterbuilt smoker for sure. been using one for many years.

You didn't say if yours is gas or electric?  I have always used the electric.

the only downside to the mes is having to add chips every 30 - 45 min.

You can do a search on the site for the amnps. This is a product one of our members designed and built that burns sawdust or pellets. with dust you can get 4-6 hrs of smoke with pellets you can get 8 - 10 hrs of smoke..

If you have any questions there is a section that covers gas and one for electric. Or just ask.

My Masterbuilt is electric. Its getting preseasoned right now according to owners manual instructions.. Is it common for the smoker to have smoke coming out of it on the initial run before the wood chips go in.

Yes you should have sprayed the racks and inside walls w/ cooking spray before seasoning . this will smoke and steam when burning off
