Hello all,

I recently found an old smoker that was my grandfathers who has since passed away.  I am unsure about how this thing works, or what is needed to operate it. The smoker is a Masterbuilt 7-1 Hitch-Haul which I'm sure is about 20 years old.  I have a couple of questions about the equipment.

1. Do I place the wood chunks directly above the heating element (see photo 1)?

2. The water bowl has a hole in the bottom from corrosion, is the water bowl necessary for the operation of the smoker?

Any input or advice will be appreciated, I have no experience using a smoker.

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to SMF Kangallama.  Be sure to stop in over at roll call so folks can give you a proper welcome.

I did a Google Search for Masterbuilt 7 in 1 Smoker Manual and it doesn't look like much has changed in 20 years.  Do the search and download the manual.  You'll be able to determine not only how use it but if there are any missing parts that need replacing.

Have fun with the family smoker!
