If you do pork shoulder the best is to get bone in, however if you want to use boneless just make sure that you use butcher twine to tie them into a uniform bundle. Otherwise the "flaps" from where they cut out the bone will cause it to cook unevenly.
Other than that, yes pork butt is a great first smoke, very foregiving.
