For Father's day this year I have been given the go ahead to build a new smoker (after getting a Silver Smoker for Father's day last year). My plan is to make the smoking chamber out of two 55 gal drums and use a shortened 55 gal drum for the fire box. This will be an off-set. I also plan on making it a reverse flow smoker. I have some questions for people that may have some experience doing this. Is this thing going to be too big for charcoal? Are there any special tricks to designing an effective reverse flow smoker? I want it bigger, because as I have become better at smoking, the demand for smoked meat has increased (family get togethers and such). I'm curious if this will need to burn wood or if the lump I've been using will do ok. Thanks a lot for all of your help.

Sounds like a fun project is on the board. Good luck my friend, and keep us posted with some pics every now and then.

After doing some math and some thinking, here is what I came up with. The cooking chamber will be 24" dia by 68" long (two 55 gal drums welded together). The firebox will be a 23" wide x 22.5" tall x 20" long square constructed of 1/4" steel plate. The baffle/drip pan will sit 4" or 6" above the bottom of the cooking chamber and be either 4" or 6" short of the end of the cooking chamber. Like the firebox, it will be constructed of 1/4" plate. The firebox intake is 4"x9" and the outlet to the cooking chamber is 7"x12". Hope all of that makes sense. Thanks again.
