Hi. I'm looking to get a smoker for my husband for Christmas. He's never had one before and has always wanted one but I don't know where to start. I've read a few posts so I know that we don't have a ton of space, our budget is probably max $300. And it needs to be versatile to set a temp and go if he wants to but also be able to tend it and babysit if he wants to. There is no preference of propane, electric, charcoal, etc. just want the best quality and best flavor for his needs. Any advice would be great! Many thanks from this clueless wife :)

I have to say, you're treading on dangerous ground here. If he's like most guys, he's been doing a little research and has it in his mind what he wants. Unless you get him that exact smoker, he's not going to be happy with it. However, like most guys, he probably won't say anything because he won't want to hurt your feelings. So for the next 10 years or so, he'll be stuck with a smoker he didn't want and will likely blame you for it, though you'll never know, because like most guys, he wont discuss silly things like feelings. But then one day your new neighbor, the 23 year old stewardess/gymnast/yoga instructor will notice him out in the yard yelling at the smoker he hates. She, being a kindhearted gal, will grab a couple beers and head over and introduce herself. 2 weeks later you'll find the note taped to the smoker informing you he and the 23 year old stewardess/gymnast/yoga instructor have run off to Belize to start a gymnastics/yoga/BBQ commune.

This can all be avoided by one of 2 things. Either you ask him what he wants, or you get him a $300 gift certificate to a store that sells smokers and then the 2 of you make a day of going and picking one out, together. And while you're out, you might wanna pick up a pair of those yoga pants that are all the rage these days, because, well, he's a guy and that will be a better present than the smoker anyway.

18.5" Weber Smokey Mountain

It is super easy to set up, works right out of the box without any mods or tweaks, has a small foot print on the deck, holds a lot of food, and is as close to "set it and forget it" as you can get on a charcoal smoker. I have the bigger 22.5" WSM and love it!

WOW!!!  Md I just thought you were a pretty face who knew his stuff about smoking food.  I didn't know you had that insight to male/female relationships.  What great advice!!!  Spot on!

BTW.  You own a really good smoker and your neighbour is half your age.  Focus my brother.

  Besides she is probably vegetarian!

Well thought out advice.  Keep Smokin!

Never trust somebody that wears yoga pants.... usually way to many veggies involved to fit them things on!

I think if you spoke to my wife she'd clue you in to just how much of a grasp I have on male/female relations as well as the prettiness of my face. On one hand, I do take it as a compliment that so many people high five me in awe when they see us together. On the other hand, it's a little unsettling.

On a brighter note the weather here in Belize is beautiful. Hopefully once I get out of traction from the yoga injuries, I can get out and enjoy it.

I'd vote for the Weber Smokey Mountain 18.5" as well.  I had been using an offset stick burner for the last 10 years and gave it away when we moved and picked up the WSM.  Just pulled a butt off of it a couple of hours ago (fingers are still tingling from the pull) and it was so much easier than the off-set unit was.  A gift card as mentioned above is not a bad idea, but something to unwrap and fire up is fun, so don't for get the bag of charcoal and some meat to go with it.

Mdboatbum, your post gave me a great laugh. Thanks for that and the advice! My new plan...put a copy if your post and a few hundreds in a box and tell my hubs to go get what he wants based on some sound, male advice :). He's going to love your post. He's always telling me how men don't like confrontation and you just backed him up 100%.

I am also going to put on a list of everyone else's suggestions in the event he hasn't done a ton of research. But knowing him, you are probably right and, he know what he wants already. Thanks again :).

From the looks of that rig you haven't either ;p
Hahaha, that was a pic from it's born date.

Here it is fully loaded with a little bit of everything  :)

Here's 10 Boston Butts   :)

Here's my smoking partners, Maverick and Mr. Elmer T. Lee  :)

Here's one that's kind of a minimalist demonstration of it's capacity.   Those are 18oz NY Strips in there.

This was 100 Scarbelly wings.

Have had the thing since just before Easter and I've probably put over 500 lbs of meat through it already.    Kind of easy when you figure that I can load it with up to about 100-120 lbs at one time.
