I am getting ready to start my first smokehouse build. I am going with the nice build with the block bottom with house on to and storage and fire box on the side, My first quest to start is is it better to leave a dirt bottom or concrete it before laying the block?
  2. Its really up to you, BUT the foundation is key to any good building. If you live where the ground freezes I would at least put your block on a concrete slab. You can make it an whole pad or just a footer like they do with a house.

If you don;t want to do concrete than dig a trench 4" deep and use crush and run rock. Or small stones with half stone dust mixed in. Tamped and wet down that can harden enough for a fair foundation. That is how they set pavers.

Thanks for the info. I am in the middle of pour a foundation for a new home so I could use the extra concrete to pour a pad. Wanted to do that to keep snakes or other creatures from getting in. Was not sure if some put wood and had fire in the bottom of these for cooking or other uses.
