New here, just got a MES30; AMNPS questions

Discussion in 'Electric Smokers' started by rc10mike, May 14, 2015.

  1. Just picked up a MES30 at Lowes yesterday. My first smoker (after a ton of research).
So last night I ran the break in and everything went great. Temps were perfect on internal and probe.
    I've been interested in the AMNPS but in not sure how my MES is supposed to be set up for it;
There seems to be many different versions of the MES30

    Hi Mike!!

    Welcome to SMF.

On your Gen #2 MES, the best place for an AMNPS seems to be the following:

Remove your water pan from the slanted drip plate.

Set the properly lit AMNPS over the hole left by the water pan leaving.

Set a foil pan under the water pan hole to catch any drips.

Put something above the AMNPS if needed to keep drips from putting it out.

If need be, rotate your chip dumper 180° to allow more air flow into your smoker.

BTW: Stop in at Roll Call & introduce yourself, so you can be welcomed properly.

  4. Thanks!
One thing I'm still confused about is the different versions. After a bit of searching, all the Gen2 MES have a side vent where mine has a top vent. So is mine more of a 1.5 or 2.5?!?

Great advice from Bear above, that's where I put mine and it works great. Be sure to follow closely the instructions that came with it. And if you have any problems, you've got a ton of MES smokers here to help! Enjoy your first smoke!

I would say yours is a newer model of the Gen #2 MES. The top vent was one of the problems I told them about, and it seems they made that change on some of the Gen #2 units, before they put the Gen #2.5 on the market, with all of the changes.

This is how I am using the AMNPS in my MES gen 2. Saves some rack space. Can use a foil pan on the rack above if need to keep drippings out.

Simple wire hanger that supports it below the grate and allows it to slide in and out.

    What is an AMNPS ?

I see it mentioned a lot but don't know what it is.

It's a Perforated Stainless Steel Maze that you put wood pellets or Sawdust in.

Then you light one end & get it smoking real good.

It will give you perfect smoke for up to 11 hours (When filled) without having to bother with it.

The guy who invented it is a Member & Sponsor of this Forum, and a Great guy.

    Here it is below:

  10. Twoalpha showed his in use but here is a better picture of one burning.

    And great smoke.

My explanation of the AMNPS is that its full name is the A-MAZE-N Pellet Smoker which, almost single-"handedly" turned my harsh, oversmoked meats into perfectly smoked, nay, almost professional-tasting "Q" that my family and friends love. It just provides the perfect amount of thin blue smoke over about 11 hours. When I started out with my MES 30 Gen 1, I used wood chips and that's why my smoked meats were all oversmoked.

Check's in the mail, right Right, Bear?

I just like to lay it out as clearly as possible for the newbies. A couple of night ago the Mrs. Rick admitted to me she also thought my early smoking efforts tasted too harsh but she didn't say anything at the time because she knew how important smoking was to me and didn't want my feelings to be hurt (gotta love that woman--and I do!). Ever since I switched to the AMNPS she's given me honest, rave reviews on my Q. She loved the brisket I smoked last Sunday.
