Tybee island, GA. for now
Hello, Wife and I left Las Vegas a few weeks ago for a (at least) 2 year road trip in our 5th wheel. At home we have a Master built electric smoker that was to big to take with us so today I bought the small GOSM from Walmart that I could fit between my tool box and the hitch in the back of my truck when we are driving. I'm getting it seasoned today and will hopefully start smoking in a day or two. I have a bunch of salmon in the freezer and have been catching a lot of trout up here in Colorado. I've never tried trout before, if any body has any tips on smoking trout please let me know. I have leaned a lot from you guys already.Thanks.

Jason.

Jason welcome to SMF sure sounds like a great trip. Congrats on the new GOSM. Sorry I can't help you with the fish somebody that can should be around shortly

Two years on the road where are you figuring on going?

Hi Jason, welcome to SMF. Glad you decided to join us. Sounds like an awesome trip! Keep us posted on your travels as well as your smokes.

I'm in Breckenridge Co. Now and will be here till the middle of Aug. Then will be in Austin Tx. for a while. after Tx. we will head for Florida for the winter, and then when it warms up we will go to the north east and spend the summer up there. That's as much is we have planed, but that could change. My family back in Vegas thinks we will be back in a few months. I dont have the heart to tell them this is so much fun it might be longer then a couple years. we'll see.

Just got a nice Shoulder Butt rubbed for tomorrow morning. first smoke in the GOSM. Will post pics.

Thanks agian for the first post thing.

Aloha Jaycoje,

Sounds like a fun trip! Welcome to the forum. Keep us posted as you travel around the country and most of all, have loads of fun!

Hi Jason! You are living my dream my friend. You will be able to smoke up all the local stuff at each stop. Nice. Please keep us posted!

I'm soooo jealous. I love road trips. That sounds like a dream to me.

First off welcome to the SMF. If you make your way through Des Moines, IA, give me a shout.

Now to your trout question...look under the Members List and find erain. Then I'd send him a Private Message. You do this by clicking on a persons name. That will take you to their "page" from there you'll see a place that says "send erain a private message".

I know he does a lot of lake trout and is super-dee-duper nice and always willing to give some advice.

Be sure to take lots of pictures of your smokes along your journey. It would be fun to start a little game where you post a couple of pictures of your smokes and your travels. I promise you'll become ultra famous around here.

Thanks for all the kind words. Smoked a 8lb Pork Butt a couple days ago with a basic paprika, brown sugar rub, used hickory for the smoke.I kept the temps around 225, rapped it at 170, and took it out at 200. Did some Salmon at the same time, used a salt, brown sugar, orange juice brine. They both turned out great, ate until I couldn't get out of my chair. Thanks again for all the advise and the warm welcome.

I don't know which is more enviable, the two year road trip or that great looking pork butt. LOL

Welcome to the SMF, looks like you're off to a great adventure. I'm looking forward to your next smoke and Q too.

I have done lots of trout and Kokanee in the 2-5 lb range in my Lil Chief Smoker, just treat them like small salmon and you'll be fine. I brined mine in brown sugar and salt then smoked em in the little chief .
