My names Jason and I just signed up here to get some help from the experts. Im 22 and Im a GM mechanic in Hilton Head, SC. Ive been grilling for a long time and I want to get into smoking now. Down here we do a lot of ribs and boston butts, my friends and I are pretty good at it but I think it could be better. Thats why Im here.

I also plan on converting my charcoal grill into a smoker/grill so look out for my thread, I just dont know which section to put it in yet...

Nice to meet everyone and I cant wait to get smoking!!!

Welcome to the SMF Jason. I thought I could "grill" a pretty decent rack of ribs. Been smoking for about a year now, and there just ain't no way that you can beat goin' low and slow to make the best ribs and butts of your life!

    Welcome Jason!
Hilton Head is a beautiful place and has some fantastic golf courses. I have a good friend who has a place there. We swap golf venues each spring ... one spring his place and one spring my place. Anyway, again, welcome to the SMF. We look forward to your posts and do keep us in the loop as you convert your grill to a smoker ..... sounds interesting. Oh yes, I also second the suggestion to avail yourself to the 5 day eCourse. It's loaded with great information.

Welcome to another South Carolinian to the SMF!! Not sure what you are currently using but if it's a weber kettle, you might want to consider the Smokenator. I use it on my weber and it helps with the smoking.

I just have a Kingsford- I picked it up for $50 brand new cause it was the floor model- already assembled too. The keg next to it is what I was planning on using for a firebox. I have been welding for a long time so I can make a stand for it and I have the tools to cut it. Im just wondering since now I know (from this site) that I can just buy a firebox separately, should I do that. This grill looks like it has the oval cut out where a firebox would normally be. I dont know Im pretty broke so I will probably just use the keg. Plus I like to be different...

I've seen those standard fireboxes and think you would be better off making one out of the keg...just my opinion.

Welcome to the SMF, Turbo. Another source is that Jeff's rub's (a few $ for the link) are a good start. (I have yet to modify them but am still learning)
