New guy from PA

    Hey guys.  Great site and I am already learning a ton after only a short visit.  Long story short I am a meat fanatic that loves to grill.  The only natural progression for me was to go to bbqing. So here I am.  Looks like I am going to be picking up a new lang in the next couple of weeks and I cant wait to start cooking.  I will post my progress as I start q'uing.  Thanks for the great site.

    Fired up the Propane Smoker this past weekend ,,,,,, it was about 15* mid morningsunday, ending with a -4*degrees this monday  morning.

    I know you hardcore charcoal smokers hate electric and propane, but its masterbuilt, propane with mods, and it held the temp at 200- 225 very well for 12 hours. I was very suprised, because of its thin walled no insulated construction, held its temp very well.....go fiqure.

     First off welcome Buck to SMF. You'll like it here cause there are alot of really good folks that would just love to help you with anything to do with smoking. Now we like having new folks here to give a new prospective on some of the ways we do things around here. Now if you are really new then I would suggest that you sign up fir the 5-day E-course it free and it will give you the basics on smoking and a few recipes too. Here's a link to it:

    Thanks for all the replys guys.  I am in Montgomery county. Bob1961 I have a camp up in Pike county, near Lords Valley.  Do alot of hunting/fishing/trapping up there.  I am getting close to getting my lang.  Hopefully I will make the road trip down there.  I already started the ecourse and will post more when I start smoking.  Thanks again!

    This is the first I saw this thread.

    My family had a cabin on State Game Land for about 50 years (1947 to almost 2000) at Saw Creek, off 402 (Whitaker Road).

    I know Pike County better than the county I live in now (Lehigh), but not as good as Bucks (where my heart is).

    I used to catch native Brookies off the little 402 bridge, just north of the churches at Lord's Valley.

  18. Ok, thought to run the smoker this mornin... Picked up a butt 7#, shoulder(picnic) 9#, and a brisket point 5#, everything dry rub at about 12 hours or so ago, 1 am now.[​IMG][​IMG], running temp outside, 15*deg. Wind gusts 50 mph, about 1 * deg feel like temp.
     
  19. I am running a masterbuilt, propane smoker, with wood stove rope, gasket that I drilled and inserted, the door was leaking heat and smoke for sure! But cured the issue. All steam, smoke, and heat venting through top stack! Also I placed a porcelain shallow pot with lump charcoal, and wood for smoke, the propane helps with cold temps, wind, and keeps a even temp at 220* avg. Crazy as it sounds!

Bucktailer, welcome to SMF, looks like the guys have mentioned about everything that I tell people when they are new, mballi has put it down pretty good and given you some important links to go to.  The only thing I would say is to use the Search Bar, (near the top of the page) and the WIKI sections to find out about anything you want to read about, there is literally tons of material here to read about. One other thing that helped me, in the WIKI section under the letter A, there is a list of Acronyms, print off a copy of these and keep it close to your computer.  It will help you understand what we are talking about sometimes.  Again, glad to have you and Welcome from Southwest Virginia, mining capitol of Virginia!
