I have a New Braunfels Bandera smoker & I like it a lot, but I'm not feeling real confident in the temperature gauge. I have an extra Taylor thermometer...any ideas on how I can check the internal temperature? I have heard of people taking their digital thermometer and sticking the probe completely through a potato to get the temp...anyone ever tried this or have another idea?

Or...what's the best way to test the gauge on my Bandera?

Take your temp gauge out and test it in boiling water. I took a wire coat hanger and bent it so I could rest it across pot of water. Set gauge in wire where probe is in the water. Also I plugged off the connection where the gauge goes in the lid. Drilled a 13/16" hole at grate level on each side of lid and added two temp gauges there. This smoker, I have found out is like a female......it likes to be pampered. It is not a set and forget smoker. Good luck.
