my first ugly drum smoker

inkjunkie, I did but without the breather holes for the air intake. I just finished the cleaning last night so when i'm done with work tonight I'll drill the holes and light her up again proper this time. 

Was able to get ~70% to come off the top portion but closer to 25 on the lower portion of the drum. I tried washing it away after the burn but it was a no-go. Really worked it with Easy Off oven cleaner and a Magic Eraser last night. I was literally inside the drum getting at the bottom.

The downside to not having a grinder or access to a sand blaster. I'm going to try and get a solid burn again tonight, time allowing. This weekend will be smoke time though.

When I did the first burn on mine I didn't have the intakes drilled. While it burned ok, I did a second burn with the intakes, burnt out more of the lining. I still had to spend several hours with the angle grinder. I should have just paid to have it blasted...

Been there, done that, and will never do it again. I feel your pain.

It is worth spending the $30 to get a 4" angle grinder.

After burning up several cheapie Harbor Frieght grinders I spent some $$ on a Dewalt. Thing will run circles around that HF pile-o-junk.

I completely agree! Only reason I decided to tackle the lined drum was impatience. I've been so excited to finally start this build and get my own drum that I took it regardless. The ~$100.00 price tag wasn't much help either. Gave me the perfect tool to swoon the wife over with. Ha. passed that just getting the supplies. (three pipe stacks and two ball valves for air control in stead of just nipples at the bottom of the barrel. Materials for the charcoal basket were higher too because I couldn't find the larger cheaper sections.) and I just found out a replacement dome WSM lid is ~$90.00 each. I will be getting one of those at some point soon.
