well i was at a customer location today and i saw all of these drums just laying around and i wonder out loud " i wondering what they are doing with all of these drums " and the guy i was with said " oh we are saving these up and re-ship them back to the manufacture " and he ask me why do you ask....i said will i have been wanting to make a drum smoker and i went into the full story about making these and this guy was so impressed with the idea that he gave me one of these as long when i get it done he gets something cooked for him....i told him i can do that...so without further ado here she is ...The Drum Beginings....

now this labeled worried me because of what was in it

but when i opened the lid this is what i saw

looks good huh...must of had a bag or liner in it ...so not that much cleaning i think
and he is the lid that goes with it

i got pretty much all the stuff to do it....got the ball valve and a gate valve ,
charcoal basket , just need to get the paint , bolts and grates and a temp gauge
i guess i will be doing this project in the next few weeks and will see it then for the inaugural smoke...got to think about what am i going to smoke first any suggestions????

Great score on the drum!!!

you already have the lid off, so all you have left is the vents and a basket.

lots of ways to finish it, mine has 3 1" vent holes, 2 are caps on threaded nipples and one has a 3/4" ball valve. I have a flat top, so my weber grate sits down in the barrel about 8" (low enough that when I get a weber lid, I can add a second grate and cook on both!)

as for the basket, I have 15" round x 12" tall basket on 4" SS legs (bolts) - I also have a lid that goes on top of the charcoal basket; it diffuses the heat and keeps the meat drippings from hitting the coals.

you will love your UDS!!!!

these things work so good, you can cook anything first with confidence! (I have 30lbs of pork butt on mine even as I type this!). I have done chicken qtrs, thighs, whole turkey, butts, fatties... its all good!!!

Great score on the drum. Nothing like being at the right place at the right time yes? I'm looking forward to the first smoke on your drum.

Congrats good score don't forget to get pics of the build

Hey Mike, good to see ya!

I'd do a pork butt first. and some spam and some fatties... and abts... and bacon wrapped corn... and maybe a plump hen.

Good luck with the build!

Yes you got one heck of a score with the drums so now you are more then half way there. Yu just have to burn it out and drill some hole and your Smokin.
