Found some sort of grate in the metal salvage yard. While it will work just fine for burning splits briqueets, if standing on edge, slide thru. Just so happen to have a piece of mild steel expanded metal the same size as the grate... wondering how quickly the fire will destroy it....

IMO, by the time the expanded metal is gone, it will be time to do a referb on the entire smoker. There's a lot of expanded metal in use. My grates are about 10 ga. and I'm not worried at all.
