MES smoking at low temps?

I see lots of comments all over the place that the MES has a hard time igniting wood chips at lower temperatures (say below 200). Has anyone tried using something like a propane torch to start the chips smoldering before you put them in?

Just curious if this would work.

I don't have an MES, but I can tell you for a fact that it works when just using a hotplate in smoker for the same purpose. I can't believe that it would not work just as well in an MES.

If it still doesn't work well, put one single piece of charcoal in with the wood and then hit it with the torch, the charcoal keeps the wood going even if it isn't getting quite what it needs from the heating element.

yes you are correct, the MES as great as it is, does not like to smoke at low temps.....so for cold smoking you have to be creative.....I pipe the smoke out of my MES vent into my old big chief, some pic's are here on the site but you would have to search the forums.....been a long time.....
