It doesn't work.  I've had it for a couple few months and sometimes it comes on and sometime not.  Anybody know about a fix?

Yep...Get a Thermapen! Just kidding...[IMG]   Can I assume you did the typical stuff? Change the batteries? Clean the battery contacts? A pencil eraser or emery board works. That's all I can think of right now...JJ

Seriously, get a Thermapen. If you want rock solid, no nonsense, never doubt it performance, it's the way to go. Others will chime in about $25 Chinese knockoffs being just as good, but for my money I'd rather buy the best once, rather than save a few bucks and have to buy another one when the cheapie goes out. And it won't go out when you don't need it. It'll go out when you're trying to impress a house full of people with your masterfully smoked, perfect medium rare whole prime rib that you dropped $150 on. Or on Thanksgiving when your mother-in-law has already been voicing her concerns about your ability to cook a turkey in "that contraption in the back yard". Do you really want to take a chance on a cheap thermo in these situations?

Got this one from Todd.  I think the quality is good but it just kinda craps out now and then.

I've been switching my universal Maverick probe from BBQ to meat temp.  I'll get it worked out somehow.

Doing 80 lbs of brisket this weekend so I'm a little nervous.

80# brisket! Wow a dinobeast!  Just kidding, just kidding! I saw a roast as big as a table at a fancy party once, I asked for the chef because I had to know what had a raost that big. He laughed and told me it was 8 roasts that had been pieced together. LOL You know he thought me a country bumpkin, and I was.

Every time I have a problem with a maverick, I change the batteries first, then I'll swap probes. My first probe lasted 14 years, I buy replacements now 4 at a time. We are now a throw away society. Did I mention I have three mavericks? LOL Some of the old farts around here have a bunch more than me.

Another problem is sometimes you'll get the wrong probe for your Maverick.

Those three things are really all I know.

I am lazy, I like my remote alarm so I don't have to keep walking out and poking holes. BUT the Thermapen is much more versatile.

No offense to Todd, but what part of "it just kinda craps out now and then" screams quality? The venerable ET 732 is plagued by the same issues. When it works, it's great, but between the unbelievably weak probes, random loss of wireless connection and occasional freeze ups, I've learned to NEVER trust it for more than a loose idea of what may or may not be going on in my meat or smoker. In Todd's defense, he's been great with customer service in all my dealings with him. He very kindly offered to send me 2 new probes and eat the shipping for $25. I know he doesn't make the units and, again, as a businessman he's top notch.
I'm just glad Maverick doesn't make airplanes.

Maverick didn't used to be this way. But I agree. You think maybe Mavericks gets its probes from the same outsource that MES does? It sure appears like it these days.

My only concern with the Thermapen is that for the price, they aren't guaranteed for life but a $25 knock off is.  Electronic Temperature Instruments, Ltd. in Worthington England manufactures the Thermapen and Thermoworks in Utah is a marketing company that sells and promotes the Thermapen.  Either one or both locations have a division, employing people for repairing out of warranty Thermapens for $20. If you pay a premium for a reliable sound technical instrument, you shouldn't have to pay again on the same unit when it fails. Oregon Scientific and Component Design Northwest (CDN) in Oregon and Maverick in New Jersey none are 100% built/assembled in the USA.  So giving money to the UK or China is inevitable so I'll stick with the $25 option.  Businesses can't stay in business if they constantly honor lifetime warranty's so the warranty validates the tool.  I would have no problem spending the money on a Thermapen if the warranty reflects their outstanding quality.

Kinda  like my post on the thermapen.  I'm all about the warranty.  The Thermapen warranty doesn't reflect their quality so they have a repair division!?  I'll give the no name therms a shot.  I won't hypothesize and make hasty generalizations about quality on therms that aren't commented on as much unlike the Mav Et-732 - 733 (they didn't even make it to Consumer Reports but we patronize our sponsors that sell them and have endless threads on dissatisfaction/concerns/probe failures.)   The Range Master in my signature below is the best $6.49 remote therm I can think of (as well as others that picked them up at Aldi.)  I just read posts and have more concerns with probe quality, syncing frustration etc more now than ever with Mavs.  The ET-735 Bluetooth is a brand new hit/miss nightmare as well.  My therms have to fail the boil/ice water tests before considering Maverick.  I look forward with great anticipation on reading Mav posts when I get an email notification because you never know if it's going to be a good or bad one.

BTW, I did 80 lbs of brisket this Labor Day weekend and the pen worked fine...whew!

I was in heaven!!!!  Did 6 packers and they ALL turned out great!

My wife keeps asking me why someone like me likes to smoke....she says I don't have the patience for it.  I did this weekend!!!!
