My Brinkmann electric smoker (the orange bullet) died (yea) and my wife has said she'd get me a better one for my birthday (lucky me!) I have been looking at a Masterbuilt Electric smoker 20070213 or 20070215, and would like to hear some opinions about these two smokers I know the 15 is replacing the 13. For a more even heat distribution, would it help to put lava rocks or ceramic briquettes on the bottom of the smoker? The Brinkmann had lava rocks. What other things would help me with the new smoker? Thanks.

  2. Welcome to the site.  Lava rock/ceramic briquette will work, I'm not an electric smoker guy so I can't answer you're other questions, but you could try posting them over in the electric smoker section of the forum.  Good luck with your search for a new smoker, and good smokin.

The two links below should answer about all of your MES questions:

I have a 40-inch Masterbuilt and have had it for about a year.  I am smoking a whole brisket in it right now [IMG]

I have never had to add lava rocks nor have I heard of anyone doing this.  It heats evenly.  The only downside is having to add chips during the smoking portion of the particular meat you are smoking.  I find soaked chips work best and only require replenishment about once every 25 to 30 minutes.  Dry chips maybe every 20 to 25 minutes.

Season the smoker once you get it.  Follow the Masterbuilt instructions. They are spot on.  Maybe do an extra smoke in an empty smoker for good measure.

Get familiar with the blue-tooth app.  Like a dummy, I updated the app and it went from a very easy to use app with big bold numbers to a stupid graphical app with tiny pale numbers and a big thermometer graphic.  I still hate the new app as compared with the old one, but I have gotten used to it.  The alarm feature does not work. Be careful touching any of the numbers by the thermometer or you will adjust the temp of the smoker...or turn it off.

If you can get the one without the glass in the door, do it.  The glass gets roached and I gave up trying to clean it on the first try.

    I hope this helps...Enjoy!

No water in the Pan. Does nothing good. There's enough Humidity in an MES.

No soaking chips. Just causes steam until it dries out enough to light. Does nothing beneficial. IMHO

No Rock or Briquettes in the bottom. Not Needed.

You can put sterile sand in the water pan & cover it to hold heat, but I never did & I live in PA.

Recommend getting an AMNPS. Once you get it lit properly, It will give you up to 11 hours of Perfect Smoke, without touching it.

Please forgive my ignorance, but is an AMNPS? I am really looking forward to getting and using the new smoker. Thanks for all of your help.

Sand in the water pan to help regulate the temp.

AMNPS pellet burner can be seen in this picture at the bottom left.
