Looking Back

Yesterday I read through all of the threads that I started as kind of a look back into my smoking past -- short as it is. Wow, I had forgotten how frustrating some of those early smokes were and had to chuckle as I read them. Which is exactly what the old pros here said I would do when I looked back to those times.

I would like to thank all of the members who encouraged me and helped me with tips and tricks through the crazy times. A lot of it seems second nature now thanks to you guys and gals. I have learned a lot and continue to learn more every day.

I hope that I can be as much of a help to the new members as the old pros were to me.

Yep, I have to echo that, and the part about laughing at your old threads. I think we all do, and we even chuckle at some of the newbie threads that are going through the same trials and tribulations. That is by no means a dig or being mean, its just what it is. Usually after the chuckle or the smiley icon, the help is offered by many here. Learning by others mistakes is just as good as others learning by your mistakes!

I hafta agree with ya Dave. Its good to reflect back on the early threads, and I recommend that everyone do it on occasion, reguardless of how seasoned you are!

one of the MOST frustrating things i have every had in my life, is the dreaded learning curve.......I HATE IT...........but weeks or months later, i think back, and say.........HMMMMM.....it wasn't THAT hard........LOLOLOL(at myself)..........

i am going thru a learning curve now, trying to be helpful in Freecycle.........and all i have to do is think back on my first REAL smokes.........cause i have been doing smoking (so called) for close to 30 years.........but didn't really learn HOW to smoke, till i found this place......thanks for the reminder Dave

I have to second that with a special thanks to Flash. When I decided to get away from the grill and start smoking, Flash taught me a lot of good stuff in the beginning in of all places, a fishing forum.

He pointed me over to SMF and I learned a ton from a lot of smart and helpful folks. So, I say "Thank You" to all the SMF members who helped me and continue to do so.

It certainly is!! And my wife is much more supportive now that I am creating things that are actually fit to eat!!

Those early creosote spare ribs were pretty baaad.

(But I ate them. Made my tongue a little tingly though. I thought it was the pepper in the rub!!)

The tipping point was the Memorial Day baby backs and the pork butt at the end of June. The meatloaf is always popular as well. I knew I was in for smoother sailing when we were eating ribs at Sticky Fingers in Georgia and she said she liked them but she liked mine better. Thanks to SMF.

My history here is not that long , but I do remember before joining S.M.F. I would attempt to regulate temps. by using the vent on the exsaust stack !! I mean , it DOES come with the smoker , right ?
