Large propane project

Discussion in 'Other Builds' started by kobornigan, May 17, 2010.

  1. OK, this is just in the planning stages right now, but I want to build a large propane smoker out of a 275 gallon oil tank. The oblong shape should allow me to keep with the vertical concept as with my Brinkman, therefore the internal concept/design should be similar right? What I mean is: burner, wood pan, water pan then grates. Any thoughts or ideas are very welcome guys & please tell me if I'm way off here.

Notes: I like the convenience of the propane models so I tend to shy away from wood only. I like the size of the oil tank, which should allow for more cooking space.

    So: can it be done?

Sounds like a great project and I don't see why it wouldn't work with the right setup and burner. Don't forget to post lots of pics of the build.

  3. Thanks PW...I'm thinking of fabricating everything myself, including the burners.

I am thinking  and planning  about the same thing. Planning on three shelves and the capabilty of smoking half a hog. It will be a trailer mounted smoker.

  5. Nice! I got a small (4'x4') trailer that needs a little TLC and I have some connections for the tank. If I can get the tank soon, I thinking this will be a great winter project. Keep us posted on yours Eagle!
