Kingsford with Hickory

    Good morning everyone,

    Don't know if anyone has seen this stuff yet but here in the Atlanta area our Kroger grocery store has Kingsford with hickory bits for $5.99/17# bag. I tried it yesterday for some bb ribs with hickory chucks added and I like the stuff. Just thought I'd give anyone who cares a heads up. Happy smoking.

    It's still a briquette. Watch out for ash buildup... interesting concept tho... built in hickory.

    I've tried it grilling some steaks and it didn't burn very hot or consistent. There were alot of half burnt coals when I was done. It did make for some good smoky flavor though

    Hey Steevie - just out of curiosity have you tried using hardwood lump charcoal with your smokes? As Rich mentioned briquettes produce lots of ash and unless you've got a good method of shaking that stuff out, it will smother the flames sooner than you'd want.

    Thanks for sharing the price break on those briquettes. There are others in the forum that do use that stuff [​IMG]

    I aquired about 100 pounds of the stuff, ecept its royal oak for a smoke session this weekend. I smoked some ribs with it yesterday but then ran out and bought some hardwood today for the briskets. The stuff burned good, temps were great but it was alittle strong and not as clean as the hardwood I used today. Its probably good for grilling but not what i was ecpecting when I ordered it.

    Well, I do understand the stigma attached to using briquettes. On the WSM all I do is give it a few taps with my foot and the ash falls. Yeah, there is a good bit of ash but overall I really don't have a problem with this. I've used lump and will use it again. I just need to use lump a little more to get used to the higher temps and quicker burn. But in the mean time I will continue to use this for a while. What I do like using is the DuraFlame hardwood briquettes I find at Publix supermarkets here in Georgia. It's more expensive than the stuff Home Depot had last year and the Kingsford but is a good product.

    You got to experience the ashy briquettes personally, at least you can say you tried them.

    I've seen the Duraflame hardwood briquettes at my Publix in FL as well. They also have their own Greenwise brand of hardwood lump charcoal that runs $4.99 / 8.8lb bag. Bought 2 bags of the stuff and LOVE IT, considering availability and price.
