I have read many post on SMF and I think I'm ready. So here goes! 250 propane tank (free). 1 sheet 4+8 1/4 in.for fire box ($300.00). Just started this weekend, this is where I'm at. Fire box layout, and dampers cut. welding together as soon as possible. I promise to keep this thread updated. If what I have planned actually works this will be an awesome build!! stay tuned for updates

WOW and WOW again on the 300 for the 1/4 inch plate. Sorry, I'm still trying to catch my breath after reading that one. Awesome deal on the tank. It looks like you have a pretty decent hand with the O/A torch. With the plate being that high, I think I would have to check and recheck my marks before I lit the torch. YIKES.

Any plans of propane assist since you are in the build/plan stages?

WOW is right!!! No one can stop a man on a (MISSION). No propane in the plans just a RF design, But the rules are subject to change without notice LOL :)

Thats the way to roll man, let nothing stand in the way. No rules are set in stone, they were ment to be changed or broken. Can't wait to watch your build progress. One of these days I will get to start on my couple builds I have setting out front. They should finace my mother of all builds so far, a stumps gravity chute clone.

Awesome.  Can't wait to see this.  When I started my last build I had a set of plans, well those got thrown out the window about halfway thru the build.  I got a set of plans for my next build, but I don't know how long those are going to last either.

What are the dimensions on that tank?

Update on the progress, I only had a couple Hrs after work so I installed the dampers and laid out the door deminsions. Waiting on the hinges to arrive. I ordered them from KcK, heard great things about them. Forgot my polaroid so I'll try to post some pics tomorrow. I'm probably the only person that doesn't have a camera on his phone. I need to update the phone, but with the cost of metal these days the phone will have to wait lol

you can get that same sheet of steel in ohio for about $85 ... unless of course you got cold rolled instead of hot rolled. (which is what i'm guessing)  for future reference, always go for hot rolled steel ... you don't need the tolerances of the cold rolled .. not building a watch after all!

I checked several weeks ago and 3/16 4x8 was going for 110.00

 4x8 expanded #9 was almost 75.00

I think my next build that I have to buy material for will be #10 sheet and insulate then use what I save on sheet and put it toward stainless expanded.

most metal supply companies have large stocks of remnants available for around 50% of uncut metal.  it's pretty much all will call, so you just have to go and see what they have, but if you make up a cut list, you can probably find 1/4 sheets etc that will make up individual pieces at half the cost of buying full sheets.  same goes with angle, tube, etc.

Well, I got the dampers installed, cut the handles and stops,  almost ready to start welding. 1 to 2 hrs a day is slow progress, But a steady drip of water will make a hole in a rock!

1 week and it's starting to look like a fire box. Welding the seams tomorrow, and it's on to the next phase! Just a little (side note) I have the upmost respect for anyone who has built their own smoker. It's not just a build it's an adventure

I can see right now, if I was there welding I would be able to get myself shocked at least a time or two. Makes me think of an afternoon I was welding overhead and had the neighbor holding something for me and he yells (i'm getting shocked) LMAO I told him hang on a second I gota hell of a bead going and don't wanna mess it up. Well it seems that he is always busy when I look for help. LOL Wonder Why?

Again, nice work on your adventure.

It took me a little over 2 months  to finish my garage built smoker. Keep with it and have fun. Looks like it will be a very nice and large smoker.

Your right Tom, when the rain started rolling in I rolled up the leads. I have felt the "buzz" several times. I wanted to get everything welded but after the shower I called it a day. Great story (bye the way) it seems the older I get the less my friends want to play with me............
