I was talking to friend the other day about smoking meat and they asked how bad is it for you, aside from the fat and calories. I said, well you are ingesting the byproducts of combustion so I assume that might be considered carcinogenic. I did some Google searches and really did not come up with anything concrete that said, "smoked meats linked to cancer". What's everyone's take on this?

I would say, to be safe, learn to create TBS, instead of billowing white smoke, and there's no problem, and if you grill instead of smoking, don't burn it !!!

  5. well im with roadkill!! haha. we smoke or grill daily. DAILY!! and have for the past 3 yrs..rain,sleet,or snow and even during tornados.lol. but seriously through tornados!...when we clean out the fat traps or whatever and were tossing huge amounts of fat thats been cooked out/off whatever have you, we feel damn good. that amount of fat thats sitting in the traps is something NOT in our bodies. im completely healthy, no heart problems, no high BP or cholestorol..i can say the same for my wife and our quickly growing 3yr old daughter who consumes these same meats on the daily right alongside her daddy. i remember when everything used to be "grill it" "grill it" hence the george foreman grill kicking off the way it did..grill it cuz its healthier......so why not smoke it.? i bet if george foreman knew how to smoke he'd be promoting a GF Smoker! lol. and itd be the biggest health craze! guaranteed. lol. but i digress.... my first meal(when old enough) came off a smoker and i guarantee my last meal will come off a smoker...

I agree with Turnandburn and Roadkill.

It can't be bad for you if the fat is dripping off. Also you are not directly injesting the smoke as if your head was over top and you were breathing it. I don't think anybody would do nothing but smoke the wood the whole time anyway without wrapping it at some point. Who wants to taste just totally smoked meat? I like to have the flavor of the meat also. If you are worried about Carcionogines then smoke with pressure treated wood. Besides that you are fine and happy smoking!

  9. It's a shame all those healthy people will have a silly look on their face when they die having never had the pleasure of pulled pork, 3-2-1 ribs, or the like. Life is too short not to BBQ!

SQWIB is correct, moderation is the key to most things in life.

You wouldn't want to live forever , would you? Seriously , when I think about all the toxic fumes , dusts , and solutions I've worked around all my life , my bbq smoke consumption is pretty low on my list of worries. :grilling_smilie:

You are going to die from something, might as well be something you like.

There was some discussion about when you grill and the fats dripping down on the coals that the resulting burn off may not be healthy.

Have not seen anything about low n slow smoking causing problems.

My cold smoke generator has a trap before the smoke gets into the smoker.

Each time I smoke, I get this black stuff condensed into the trap. This black stuff can't be good for health.
