The new new guy here. Grant is my name and I am beginning the build of an RF smoker trailer grill doohickey. Actually, I am still in the "in my head" stage of the build. Got a trailer frame to start and a 100 gallon diesel fuel tank off a truck for the body.
I am from Silverdale, WA. I am not a skilled pit master nor do I have much knowledge on the subject but I am gonna give 'er hell because I have a freezer full of prime Hereford/Angus beef to hone my skills with. We raise our own grass fed organic (I hate that word) yummies on the hoof in Idaho so it is about time to get with the program and put my smoker project into high gear. I work as a Diesel Mechanic and the majority of my work day to day is fabrication so this is right up my alley.
My plan is to take a Harbor Freight trailer chassis and build a custom smoker/grill out of it. I have a 100 gallon steel diesel fuel tank that is screaming to be cut up and used to hold large quantities of meat. This unit will be basically built like a high offset smoker - hot box on one end, lower baffle in the main chamber to push the smoke to the far end of the grill and radiate heat from below, smoke stack at the same end as the hot box for good cross flow of the smoke and heat. However, I am going to tweek it a bit and add a couple extra features that most don't have. I am planning a drop in pan for charcoal that will sit on the baffle plate so the unit can be used as a charcoal fired grill for burgers and such. In addition to that, I am going to add a black pipe burner rail and a diffuser plate above it to radiate heat and deflect grease to also work as a quick and dirty heat source for grill. This will be placed at the rear of the compartment. Wish I was good at making digital mockups so I could show you all what I have planned. But alas, I am not. Just gonna have to wait for the pics as I build i:-)
A local dealership has a Southern Steamer trailer smoker grill that they moded and added a second burner to, tweeked the settings and what not and made it into a monster trailer grill. I am using some of their ideas to add to mine.
Looking forward to being part of this forum and learning to take great meat and turn it into SUPERIOR meat...
