welcome to SMF, there are a lot of folks here that have built there own smoker, so I am sure you will did a lot of help if needed or wanted

im currently looking for some scrap / materials to start a smoker i m also trying to decide how big i want it i would like to be able to transport it it without a trailer if i need to

If you aren't too set on adding a fire box to your existing grill you shoudl check out a UDS (Ugly Drum Smoker) they are very easy to build, you can fit a ton of meat on them, they burn for 12-20 hours and they are light so you can take them with your where you go. They are made out of a 55 gallon barrel. I built on this past winter and LOVE it. It is by far the most used smoker I own. Just a suggestion.

i thought about a uds but i keep goin back to wanting to build a side fire box i think it gives me more options on building it
