  1. well, after much sweat, money, more sweat, a bit of blood, paint, welding, more money, and lots of time, the smoker i am building is almost ready(ish) i have been burning out the tank for 2 days now its been running nice and hot inside it, think i got almost all the old junk burnt out - i have been weighing the pros and cons of using an old fuel oil tank, and have decided to use it for now to practice with and see how well i can get it going. i will probably end up getting a new tank in the spring for it. i'm going to be spending all day tomorrow trying to keep the smoke in the pit at a fairly even temp on a dry run, then with any luck, put ribs on it for the first time on monday.

i have photos of the progression online here

there is still a lot to be done to it - but the smoker itself should be ready for its first run - have to put gasket rope, thermometers in the doors, and handles in the morning, and i'm all kinds of nervous about it, first run, and making sure it is all been done right.

Congrats on the smoker, and welcome aboard the SMF. We'll look forward to your progress reports, and pics too.
  10. well i've been running smoke thru it for about 6 hrs now - had stayed about 220-230 for the entire time until about 1/2 hr ago - it dropped down to about 200 - going to tinker with it and see if i can get it back up a bit.

If I did not see the pictures I would not have believed it.

    That is way too cool.

    Nice job
  14. one of the reasons for making such a large pit is so that i can use it to possibly help raise money for some of the fire departments in the area. well, that, and i figure if nothing else it will turn a head or two.
