Hello everyone. I'm very excited to be a member of this group. I've already started some threads and have received great advice thus far. Everyone in this group Rocks! I can tell I'm in the right place.
I was born and raised in Erie, PA and live here now. I lived in Phoenix, AZ for about 3 years, but moved back to my home turf in 2008. I'm 29 years old and was raised on a Weber kettle. My father refused to cook on anything but a Weber. I loved to help my Dad cook on the Weber when I was a kid, and now I have that same Weber from when I was young to cook on. As expected I followed my fathers footsteps and started my Q on a Weber kettle.
I now smoke on an offset that I modified myself. Origingally it was a Backyard Professional charcaol grill that they sell at Sam's Club. My dad bought it for himself a few years ago (he thought he could deviate from the Weber). As expected he just couldn't bring himself to cook on anything but the weber and gave the Backyard Pro to me. It's a beast. I removed the two charcoal baskets and grinded out the divider in the hood. I then went to Lowes and bought a Chargriller firebox and mounted it on the side. I will post pics soon. I've been smoking on it for a year and a half now, and it is a great smoker to start out on. But I'm already saving for my Lang 48 deluxe. Hope to have it by next summer.
I've mainly smoked with lump charcoal and hickory chunks, but I really want to get into smoking with straight wood. I tried my hand at this past weekend but didn't do so well. I got some great tips from SMF and plan to put that advice to work real soon. I'm not a pitmaster yet, as my name indicates, but it's what I aspire to be. And I thought that was fitting. I look forward to meeting everyone and happy smoke!
