Hi,

I'm been lurking on this site for a few days now. Last week I picked up an MES 30 20071414 from Bass Pro for $199. Upon furher research I found that this model has some issues. I plan on returning it this week. I'm hearing the one to buy is the MES 30 Gen 1 20070910. I found a great deal on line at Gander Mountain this past Sunday afternoon for about $135. I must have bought one of the last ones becuase it was taken off their website the next day. I'm supposed to pick it up later this week at the store. Gander said an extended two year warranty should run me about $20 and if so, I will opt for that as well.

I need a couple of other things and am looking for suggestions. I need a weatherproof cover and what kind of chips do I buy for break in?

I'm hearing the Amazing box 5 x 8 is the way to go however I'd still like to use the chips once in a while.

I have a covered screened in porch about 14X16. Would it be okay to store out there covered or must I move it into the garage or basement?

Thanks,
Dan

Welcome to the forum. Lots of good info to be gotten here.As far as wood type, I don't believe it makes a difference on the seasoning of your smoker. I would get what you plan on using the most. As long as you keep the smoker out of the rain/snow you should be ok. I keep mine on the back patio with a cover on it year round.

welcome, i have a mes 30 also,i use the amnps most of the time,if i use chips it's hickory or apple,i've tried mesquite i just don't like it,i store mine in garage cold doesn't seem to bother it. good luck

Glad you joined the group. The search bar at the top of any page is your best friend.
About anything you wanna know about smoking/grilling/curing/brining/cutting or slicing
and the list goes on has probably been posted. Remember to post a QVIEW of your smokes.
We are all smoke junkies here and we have to get our fix. If you have questions
Post it and you will probably get 10 replies with 11 different answers. That is
because their are so many different ways to make great Q...

As said above it doesn't matter what chips for seasoning. I have a MES 40 and I never use

Chips. I only use my AMNPS and love it. Make sure you check the temp against a known

temp as most are off some. As long as you can keep it dry the porch should be fine.
Happy smoken.

Thanks, now the only thing I think I need now is a digital thermometer .  I see everyone on here likes the Maverick.  Perhaps that's the one I'll look at.  This weekend I plan to season my smoker.  I bought some Jack Daniels chips to do that until the Amazn' pellet tray arrives.  Plus I'd like to use the chip tray once in a while.   I like the JD chips.  My nephew uses them in his charcoal smoker.  Do you know if they make JD pellets?

If you go to A-maze-n web site you'll see they have a bourbon barrel flavor pellet listed. Not sure how they compare to the JD chips though.

Hey Dan, congrats on the new smoker post some pics of your smokes

Howdy Dan!!

Welcome from SE PA !!

You've come to a Great place to learn---Lots of helpful peeps here.

I keep my MES 40 Gen #1 on my front porch with a roof over it, and all I do is keep the regular MES cover on it. It stays out there 24-7-365.

Check out my Step by Steps by clicking on my Index below.  Everything on that page was done in an MES.
