GOSM running to Hot?

First time the weather has been in the 50's and my GOSM wouldn't stay below 250. I have a ball valve mod after the regulator @ the tank. I placed the dial on "High" and the ball valve almost completly shut. I was able to run in the low 220's. If the temp gets much hotter, which it will. What can I do to smoke @ 225ish?
Any thoughts?

Willy have you modifyed it any more? I have the same smoker and I have been told to put two more vents on the side down about even with the wood box (one on each side). I havent tried it yet and I cant remember who it was that told me but I think they got down to the 150'ish range. If I find my notes I'll send them to ya. Hope this helps.

If the top vent is not fully open, that will keep heat in.

I'm surprised the ball valve isn't enough to regulate the temp. I agree that it sounds like you need to draw in more outside air. I haven't done the ball valve thing yet but plan to. As it is on my lowest setting I'm at around 180o.

Willy, take out the ball valve and put in a needle valve. This will give you much better controll of your gas flow. Ball valves are for on and off, needle valves are for flow control.

I have a GOSM gasser, and I usually have to run my control between low and medium. I have not tried to see how low it will go, but I know that it will cruise below 200. Also, I haven't done any mods. I did a smoke this weekend, and the outdoor temps were in the mid 50s. It still did ok, plus it don't have the vents on the side, just the one on top.

Try setting the control to low, and you may not even need the ball valve.

Willy, ya need more air flow, add a damper down towards the bottom. Ya try one if that ain't enough you might have to add two. You might also think about addin a stack to help draw a bit more air. Good luck.

I had the top vent open. I have the wally world wide version, so no lower vents. I will try the needle valve, I agree it should offer more presice control. I had seen the stack mod but didn't know the reason behind it, thanks for the explanation.
I was kicking around getting an adjustable regulator?(If the needle valve doesn't pan out) Any thoughts?
I have noticed the sound of oxygen starvation when I crank the heat and the door is closed. Seems to draw enough to burn well at lower flame, but the flame must be to much.

I will get the needle valve and work on the lower vent issue w/top stack.

This is the valve I put on my Gosm...it is from Bayou Classic. I could not get the temp below 200 degrees on mine either. I smoked this weekend and had it down below 130 degrees. Works great...here's the link:

Have you verified your gauge is correct?

Water pan was full. The gauge is 25-40 dedrees off when compared to my ET-73 and an old oven type dial gauge. The Maverick was suspended below the cooking rack on the top shelf. Under the meatloaf and above the drip pan. Probe was clean.

Here is the mod I did to my GOSM with the needle valve. I get my temps down to 130 now without any problems. Makes good jerky as well as smoked fish... Good luck with your mod...
