They're calling for steady rain tomorrow and I've got a smoke planned for me and a couple of the guys. We're just doing some baby backs, side ribs and some chicken thighs at the cottage.

I've got a GOSM type smoker and I've never used it in the rain. Will my temps be effected by rain? I don't have any vents facing up.

Any tips to save my smoke?

That's the answer I was looking for! I just need to figure out how to make a tent for my digital thermo and I'm all set.

Thx!

If you have a quart size ziplock bag, or even a bread bag, you can put that over the top, and put a few small rocks on the rolled edges to keep it in place (wind). A clear bag will still allow you to look at temp/timer etc, if it's not a remote probe.

As for the smoker chamber temps, it will take a bit higher burner setting to get it where you want...of course temps will fluctuate with the wind if it comes in hard...just find a spot out of the wind as much as possible and shelter with something if needed.

Good luck, sounds like a great time!

A clear plastic bag? Great suggestion, Eric.

I ended up using a patio table umbrella like 7' wide and had it over the whole smoker. I was able to add chips and water in the pan, etc. and stay out of the rain this way, and my thermo was safe from the rain too.

It rained all day from 9am until 8pm... Hard too. Forgot my camera though!

Did 8 racks of ribs (sides and backs) and a 4.7lb prime rib roast (instead of the thighs). Smoked them over hickory. Used a pretty standard rib rub. On the prime rib, I used a Mango Chipoltle rub and some CBP. Once again, I slightly over-cooked the beef and didn't get that really juicy pink interior - it was only slightly pink. Amazing smoke ring though!

By 6pm when we ate, we had all been stuck in the cottage all day, so needless to say the beer buzz was good. No tv, just an acoustic guitar, acoustic bass, a couple shakers and the bongos kept us busy...

sounds like you had the rain like I did yesterday, I did like you, just got the smoker under the table umbrella, and it was fine. Much better than fighting the rain temps with my offset. raianing here again today, same set up as yesterday for the fauxstrami I have on right now.

sounds like you turned out dsome good food, and had a good time with your guests/friends. well done.
