Gaps in WSM Door Assembly

Discussion in 'Charcoal Smokers' started by jraiona, Jan 20, 2015.

  1. When I finished assembling my new 18.5 WSM (yay) I noticed gaps in the top of the door assembly. Has anyone else experienced this and if so what did you do about it? I'm concerned with the gaps allowing smoke to leak out and making temp control a bit more challenging

  2. Most use high temp silicone for small leaks. Use the search bar and see what other mods have been done to your smoker.

    Happy smoken.

You can "adjust" your door by bending it over your thigh to change the bend. Also once you get a half dozen smokes or so under your belt the smoke residue will seal up most of the small cracks and what not. Or like others have done you can buy the gasket kit or a Cajun Bandit replacement door.

I put in the gasket kit and replacement latch available on Amazon and it worked great. Gasket sits on middle section for lid sealing as well as another where the door closes. Very little leakage there...

Here's what my WSM door looked like when I first assembled the smoker.  I'd say it had a bit of a gap.  Weber sent me a replacement door which was basically in the same shape. I got physical with the first door to get it to fit better and have been using it ever since.  I too have the gasket kit installed so you should get a nice seal once you start reshaping the door.
