My wife bought me a chargriller duo and sidebox for my birthday/anniversary present.  I have not attempted to use the sidebox yet and want to try it out.

I bought enough charcoal (briquettes and lump), but then read I should use wood logs somewere online.

Anybody want to walk me this first timer thru the process?

I sometimes use my chargriller and its an ok grill and will get done everything you want to do you just need to tend in more. first thing you should do is look into some of the mods that people have done to their grillers. the dryer hose trick is a must. I invert my "grill side"  ash pan on some bricks to make a heat baffle and put a tin roasting pan full of water on it just over where the firebox attaches to the grill ( in the grill not the firebox). and yes chunk wood from any box store works just fine in your firebox. I use them when ever I am running my griller as I have cut my other wood to long to fit in the firebox on mine. your gonna have to use it a bit to learn what the grill likes but that part of the fun of grilling/smoking. good luck and happy smoking
