Do you think that cost of smoking calculation will make people quit smoking?????

Same deal goes with canning, canning is expensive.  A few years ago I calculated time(at my hourly billing rate)/energy/supplies and making a quart of tomato sauce cost me $18 each for 7 jars. I can buy them for 1 buck or 2 each on sale. But is the taste better?

Sure, in the winter I can buy cans of tomato's 5 for 5 bucks, but to open that canned jar of  summer grown tomatoes in the middle of winter, oh, there is nothing like it.

If you are in it to make the money, there is some to be made, but production must be on a large scale to make any of it profitable.

For most it's the enjoyment of doing, making wholesome quality foods, sharing with others, and getting quality smoked meats or canning fruits and veggies that are to our own taste.

I made some smoked Polish style sausage with turkey and pork trimming. My material cost was under 2 dollars per pound. I made about 10 pounds and worked at it for  about 4 hours total . I didn't have any paying work to do so I can't fairly count the value of my labor. The grocery store price is about 5 dollars per pound. In order for me to have $5 to spend I have to earn $9 and pay taxes on that earned income. Besides knowing what is in the sausage I made and smoked I probably would not spend $5 per pound for Turkey Hill Brand anyway.

If you really want to save money you can do what I do. 1st have a brother that likes hog hunting. 2nd, ask nicely for a pig that has been kept in a pen and corn fed for a couple weeks. 3rd clean and package said pig and keep her in the freezer until needed. Has worked out well so far. For the low low price of free and effort I am good to go for another month or so. Repeat as needed lol.

Besides knowing what is in the sausage I made

I see this rationalizing a lot here....which totally makes sense. But take a look at some sausage recipes on this forum: phosphates, meat glue, sodium erythorbate, corn syrup. What's the point of knowing what goes in when most of it is crap that does not belong in food. Not saying that you do it.

Y'all do know that the OP was talking about cigarettes, right?
I have been watching this thread just to see someone post that!!

Ha Ha it would cost me  $180.00 a month if I was still Smoking, that's roughly $90.00 a pound, sorry couldn't resist!!

I'm actually surprised the Mods haven't deleted the link.

Hey, don't pee on our fire. That's what the OP gets for talking about smoking on a smoking forum lol. I didn't even notice a link in the original post until someone pointed it out.
