    Hello all,
My name is Pat and I am from Chicago. I own a landscape business and in my spare time (if there is such a thing) I love to fish and hang out with my 5 yr old daughter. I am not a good cook, and haven't smoked anything a day in my life, but practice and patience makes perfect I have been told. I purchased a Masterbuilt 40" gas smoker but have yet to recieve it. So I am doing my homework early. Any and all help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Pat

  2. Welcome Pat.  I'm hardly a good cook either and very new to smoking as well so if I can do you so can you. I just smoked my first meat today and let me tell you, it was VERY easy and super tasty. My 9 year old daughter loved it.  I've also got a Masterbuilt but went electric and you can see my thread in the Roll Call as well for pics/info on what I did which might help you or at least calm your nerves.  Happy Smokin'.

Hi Pat,  I received my smoker this year for fathers day from my 2 girls, 10 and 7.  Their only complaint is that I put it too close to the trampoline lol.

Here are a few suggestions that helped me.  First enroll in the 5 day e-course on this web site that Jeff Phillip's offers.  It is great.  Next, use the search engine that is at the top of every page.  Type in "Masterbuilt 40" gas smoker" and start reading.  The more you read the more questions you will have then search some more or start a thread like this one here.  I have found that everyone that I have interacted with are all so willing to help.  Everyone has been so friendly and helpful. I truly believe there is nothing you can ask that you won't get a half dozen good response about.

One last thing, once you get the smoker, play with it a few times either empty or with something cheap like chicken legs/thighs.  This way if you mess them up it's cheaper then jumping in with a big brisket.

I hope this helps.  Good luck,

    Ciao,

    Rob

Thanks for the welcomes. I definitely plan on starting with something rather cheap and on the cheap end. I really dislike this waiting game seeing all these great posts really gave me the itch.

I good idea and on the cheap side is a Fatty.  They are so versatile.  You can use any meat and fill it with anything.  then you wrap it in bacon.  do I have to say "everything is better wrapped in Bacon"? lol

If you do not know what a fatty is yet.  do a search.  you will be glad you did.  Remember to take pictures.

Definitely run a smoke through it so you can identifies leaks.  You want to get the leaks taken care of before you actually put something in the smoker because you will have a harder time keeping the temp where you want it with leaks.  Once you do take some pictures and post them.

Well an update to an update. While assembling the smoker yesterday I came to find out I was sent the same two front legs :( So unfortunately I will not be doing anything more until I get the other leg. Very disappointing to say the least. Is there a favorite wood for seasoning the smoker or would any servr the same purpose?

Smoker is finally complete. Now I am calling upon you guys for some help. When seasoning this behemoth what wood would you suggest I use? Also, for those of you who own the Masterbuilt 40" propane the valve orifice is not aligned perfectly straight inside of the Venturi does this matter it actually is almost rubbing the outer wall of the Venturi. Sorry using proper terms because this tube don't seem to sit perfect in that tube would be too vague. Thanks in advance.
