First let me say "I hate winter".  It's been in single digits here for the last 3 days and I can't stand it.  Wind chill brought it below zero and once again I can't stand it.  I need warm weather to get out and smoke........................ For a thin skinned old man this is insane, but at least I have basketball and football to get me through.  I just got my AMNPS last week and I'm dyin to try it out..................but nooooooooooooo it's gotta be cold enough to freeze hell outside.  I'm so tired of being cooped up inside ............. I wanna fish, I wanna grill, I wanna smoke, heck I even wanna do yard work.  How do all of you deal with winter?

It's been very cold here as well! Yesterday it was 57 degrees the coldest recorded temp in Hawaii in 120 years!!! I think that was in Honolulu; I heard this on the radio today.

I moved my smoker into the heated finished portion of my garage with a little exhaust fan to blow the smoke out the window. I can sit in there and watch tv or tinker around while making the Q. It was a gas smoker well it still is but I put a 1500 electric element in it makes me feel better about running it inside and I don't have to buy gas anymore.

um, best to ignore winter, enjoy it,

when i started the smoke for my new years turkey, it was 6 degrees. 5 hours later, it was done n the outside temp had risen to 9.

    super turkey !

there was high wind too which was not fun, so i just bot a maverick remote thermometer so i don't have to go outside just to check temps.

not gonna stop smoking because of winter, it lasts too long.

Nice garage.............wish mine was heated.  But really there's nothing like sitting in the shade on a summer day with a cold brew in your hand watching that blue smoke roll.

  10. Bummer, maybe it will warm up enough to smoke.

Thanks. Yeah I also prefer to sit outside in the warmer months I just moved operations inside for the winter.

  12. I'm going to build my smoker in my workshop the next time home from work.  I work a 2 week on 2 off schedule.  I figure there's no snow to go play around in so I may as well tinker in the shop as usual.  I'll have to wait for the ground to thaw to set the concrete base for it, but at least a good portion will be done by the time spring hits.  I've found after plenty of cold and dark winters up here that you need to have inside hobbies too or else you'll go crazy.  Reading and woodworking are my two favorites.  They can both eat up a lot of time and take your mind off the dark.

i wonder if the problem is the type of smoker you have. what kind do you use n how long must you be outdoors to do a smoke?

i calculated total time for me to smoke a butt. it's15-20 minutes over 5 hours.

Susie I have a MES 30 with a AMNPS and an Igrill2 thermometer that would allow me to just be indoors for about that much time as well.  But I go out in cold weather only to go to work, check the mail or refill the beer fridge.  Where do you live and how cold are the winter's there?

i'm on the high plains continental climate which means hot summers, often over 100, with winter lows down to 5.

most winters have lots of days in the 40s n 50s. this year is unusually cold. i got a butt out there now n it's 29, but sunny with no wind, so it's nice.

i haven't used the amns yet, but perhaps starting that adds time outdoors?

i guess i'm weird. since july 1 i've had mostly smoked food except for a small handfull of days.

your cold may be more biting than mine. the humidity here is very low.

i'm not criticizing. it's supposed to be fun. if it's not, don't bother with it.
