We have been picking tomatoes, peppers and pole beans for a couple of weeks. I have just put in 5 varieties of garlic for next year. Tomorrow, I will be pulling 5 pounds of carrots to make dilled carrots. I am eating my spicy dilled green beans as I type.

Here is a picture of today's harvest.


This is the time of year that I really love. Every day without frost means more harvest. At the first forecast of frost, I will cut the tomato plants and hang them inside to ripen the last few. We don't really start cleaning up the garden until after the first frost. 

I have tomatoes put down, 16 jars of salsa, strawberry jam, dilled green beans and bags of the best garlic around (he looks over his shoulder for an argument from Dave Omak). 

Here in the mountains it is not as warm as Florida or California and we may have to work more for it but we still enjoy home grown vegetables.

Disco...that is such a pretty basket of your veggies!

My garden has just about lost it's luster for this season.  I have enjoyed mine too.

Thanks, Kat. However, as has been pointed out to me by the missus, it is not a basket it is a hod.

Ah, you want to get me in trouble. 

I can't afford to be anything but nice. I am about to suggest I upgrade to a pellet smoker. She will say yes if I ask but I still should be on my best behavior.

Thanks! No, they are an extra early hybrid yellow cherry tomato called Sweet Gold. They are very tasty if you want to give them a try. Sweeter than a full size tomato but still a little acid balance.

Ah ok - just checking. The Sungolds are one of my favorite cherry tomatoes & I didn't get to grow any this year.

 I haven't seen the Sweet Golds but I bet they are very similar - awesome snacks!

Disco......  I just bought 3 new varieties to  plant this fall.....    Siberian, Lithuanian Purple and Montana Zemo.....  along with the Metechi and Zemo, I will again cull what I don't like down to 2 to 4 varieties in a few years.....     Talk to me next summer about me sending you some for "Brood Stock" if you wish .....   I bought 1/4 # each... $8 for 1/4 #.....  cr@p is $$$  but worth it...

Thanks, I am always in the market for a good variety. I have been growing 5 varieties each year towards working to get my favourite couple, too.

I went to the HIlls Garlic Festival here and got some that I am sure are boring to you but new to me. Spanish Roja and Polish. I dropped Yugoslavian and Italian Softneck from my rotation to add them. Now I am growing Music, and Russian Red with them. I am also growning a variety that no one has been able to identify that  a friend gave me. She got it from an old Dukhobour woman gave her. It is different from all the other heritage garlics grown in the area. It looks like a purple strip but is a little paler and has quite large cloves. I took it to the festival in hope of getting it identified. No luck. 

The sad part is it is my favourite of the garlic I have grown. So, if you would like a couple of bulbs to try of a very nice unidentified garlic, let me know. 

By the way, my second favourite is Russian Red which I realize is as common as dirt but it has a nice medium heat and stores reasonably well.
