Anyone raise fire grate on OKJ Longhorn Offset?

    Hey gang,

Getting ready for a smoke Sunday for some company we have coming in. My convection plate and charcoal basket, for my Oklahoma Joe Longhorn Offset, custom ordered from Horizon are in transit and scheduled to be delivered tomorrow.

One thing I think I really need to do though , is raise the fire grate in the firebox. That thing as it comes, sits fairly low in there, and I have a problem after 3-4 hours with ash buildup starting to choke the fire. I guess I could get a metal bucket and scrape ashes out during a smoke - but I have read where some use bolts ( 4 ) and nuts, to raise the fire grate some. Basically a nut on top and bottom of the fire grate, and the bolts acting like legs I guess.

So if I raise it say a couple of inches, of course that means the fire is couple inches higher and closer to the chamber.

Is that something I should be concerned about?

Will just aluminum bolts and nuts suffice, or should I get steel since they will be getting so hot?

I would appreciate any feedback, thanks.
