anyone know if smoked food should not be given to younger children?

    Hi All,

    I am not getting on a soap box or plan on preaching. I want to ask a question because of something that happened with my 7 year old daughter.

    Has anyone heard of smoked food being bad for younger children? I can't think it would be. I'm sure everyone on the site has fed a young child something they have smoked, no?

    Last week when i had my first smoke my daughter had some of the pork butt that I cooked. She was sick that night. The next day she didn't have any and slept through the night fine. The third day she tasted the pork butt again. She loved it. There was no complaint but that third night she was sick in the middle of the night again. The wife thinks its the pork butt. I was fine and everyone else (all adults0 that ate it were fine.

    Any ideas, comments, suggestions, or advice?

    I have never heard or seen smoked meats being bad or having a problem with younger kids.I have 36 neices and nephews also 3 of my own.Every one has been eating Grilled or Smoked foods since they could chew.

    This does not mean your child mite not have a allergic reaction.I cant eat or smell Cilantro with out getting a head ache or upset belly.If your pork butt had a heavy bark? The bark mite be just to strong for her.

    I hope your daughter gets to feeling better and you figure it out.

    Yep, one never knows for sure BUT, I'd give my smoked stuff to any kid before a MacD, Col Sanders or whatever fast food they crave. I know there are things I can't eat anymore like I used to or if I do eat them I know I will pay the price and not stray far from the throne. How is she with regular pork chops, say? I guess you will have to have a chicken leg or something for her next time you do pork butts....any reaction to other smoked foods? The PB might just be to 'rich' for her system.....much like certain fatty hamburgers are to mine. HTH's and she grows out of it live without smoked/pulled butts would be horrible, especially when she's being exposed to such goodness at a young age......Willie

    What spices are you using in your rub? She could be having an allergic reaction to something in that you weren't aware of before. Like the guy above said try cooking some without smoke or rub and see what happens. That will help you narrow it down a bit.

    I thought it might be just her.  She and I have some food alergys.  Plus the pork had an awesome (heavy) bark..

    Thanks for your reply.  She can eat normal pork chops.  the funny thing is when her mom cooks normally pork chops you would think they were smoked anyway.  lol  just joking

    I know what you mean about eating something to fatty also.  It's hard to resist but I don't leave the house that night after eating something to fatty.

    I've always tried to expose my girls to world of food even while the wife to shield them,.

    I am pretty sure she has eaten every spice that I used.  I normally will rub chicken or steak theat I BBQ on the gas grill.  I have to think it was the bark.  I am going to cook chicken next but knowing her (AND HER MONTHER) she will probably pass.  Though it would be the first time I cooked 6-7 p[ounds of meat just for me.  Nothing like left overs.

    I will have to still to gas grill fro her for a little while.  maybe we try next year.

    Since I was a kid I'll occasionally have an adverse reaction to pork. It has most often happened when I've eaten some form of cabbage a t the same time. First discovered it after eating my grandmothers pork and sauerkraut. It's also happened with pork egg rolls and potstickers, but strangely never with pulled pork with coleslaw on top. I'd say the smoke had little to do with it, though as I've gotten older heavy smoke can lead to indigestion. Then again, so can a lot of other things. 😄

    At this point, after thinking it through with and the other folks that were also nice enough to reply, I'm thinking it's definitely not the pork it self.  She has eaten pork shops numerous times and it never made her vomit.  I think the wife will stop her from trying smoked items for a while.  At least she'll still eat bbq!

    i know she is young, but when i eat to much of a good thing"fattier meats,deep fried things etc." make my gull stones go crazy, which leads to severe cramps and if i eat way to much it leads to getting sick, then the next day i'm if i know i'm going to be eating rich foods i try and drink alot of fluids, this seems to help as long as i don't over do it.again i know she is probably to young to have them but i thought i'd throw it out there..smoked meats are to good to give up!!!!!

    Gull stones aside, I think everything else you said could still apply.  to much of anything could make her sick.  Then again if you ever saw you consume ice cream it might contradict this theory.  lol

    Thanks for your comments.  I also have to say the pork wasn't that fatty.  It was apretty lean piece, or at least looked that way after the cook.  It really was good.  I can't wait to try again.  I have a good rib recipe and a good chicken wing recipe, both for the BBQ that she loves.  I'll make those for her.

    What else was on the meat? Rub you said she has had the spices, but what about Sauce? Yours or Store bought? Has she eaten the sauce with no issue before? I have studied Food Allergies but I would need to know every ingredient the touched her lips. Glad she is fine, lots of folks end up in the hospital eating things they have eaten all their lives...JJ

    ok, luckily i started a thread with the ingredients because it was my first smoke.  Here are all of the ingredients.  Nothing to challenging, no?  I only used about 1/4 of the Cayenne that the recipe called for because I know my girls don't like heat.   I injected the marinade prior to smoking then basted during the smoke.


    apple cider

    Orange juice


    brown sugar

    dry rub:

    brown sugar


    garlic powder

    garlic salt



    black pepper

    The only possibility on that list, because it is out of the ordinary, is the Worcestershire Sauce. Anchovy and Tamarind in the sauce are both Allergens...JJ

    Have her tested to see if she's allergic to anything. Found out my oldest son is allergic to peanuts by the same way. Gave him some trail mix and within a few minutes he was sick. Just figured it was a fluke. Gave him some peanuts a few weeks later and same reaction. Took him to get tested and sure enough allergies. Neither my ex nor myself are allergic to anything so you never know

    I think it is time for a trip to the alergist.  I may give him a call and ask him first too.  ym allergist is a great guy and very into BBQ.  He worked his way through medical school working a BBQ restaurant in (i think) Colorado.

    I want to thank everyone for all of your input.

    Also I created this thread thwice.  I origianblly put it in the pork forum.  When I realized that I created it in the general forum because I thought it made more sense going there.  I then forgot to delete it from the pork forum.

    I hope noone replied to both.  They both have a number of replies so I don't want to delete either now so I don't lose any comments.

    I will reach out to Jeff and ask if he would prefer that I delete one.
