... know of a good local place to buy "other wood" (i.e pecan, alder, apple, cherry, etc.) I'm sick of just smoking with hickory (which is all that the chain stores seem to sell) and I'm not very keen on paying shipping for a bag of wood.

my sportsman warehouse carries all of the above, not bad priced too.

are you looking for chips or chunks? For chunks I am in the same boat as you. For chips I have found ace hardware has a nice selection. Apple, cherry, pecan among the choices.

Also did you happen to see the florida smoke out thread under the events section? Its coming soon very near to you.

Outdoor Kitchen Store (I think that is the name) on Kennedy (Northside) just west of Dale Mabry has Cherry, Apple, Pecan.

They ain't giving it away, but is a good chance to sample other types of wood.

Men a get bags of whole peacans(the actually nut) from local flea and farmer markes. I use the shell only for smokeing don't use the meat of the nut it gives a burnt smoke flavor. then take the peacans and make a butternut cake for dessert.....I'll give you the recipe if you like....carefull it will pack on the pounds... hope this helps.
