Adopted a GOSM Charcoal

    i saw the post on craigslist "smoker i dont use it any more", i just couldnt stand it so i went to take a look and found this lonely GOSM Charcoal setting in the back yard.



    It was crying out for a new home like a puppy at the pound. so i carried it home.
    It was a lonely ride but it didnt mind. i think it new everything was going to be ok



    Found some rust on the bottom, wire wheeled it thank fully it was surface rust, some high temp black paint good as new.

    Now for some firebox mods and we will be ready for a test run. I have my eye on a stainless steel Veggie cooker that looks like it will fit perfectly. Any other ideas?

    I had thought about doing a conversion but i wouldnt know where to start?
     
  4. I don't have a GOSM but the mod that I did to my Brinkmann Square Vertical should give you some ideas on how you could modify.

    See the links in my sig below.

    Other folks have used a turkey fryer burner mounted on the inside of the box.

    Well done on rescuing a smoker from the scrapheap. That is a great sevice you have done.

    Dang thing is heavy isn't it? Much better built than the Propane versions.
    Since I have an old ECB charcoal, I went ahead and coverted my GOSM to Propane by buying a single burner setup from Northern Tool and using a side vent to install it. Works very well, love the consistent temps.



    I have since started using a coffee can to hold the wood and place it right on the burner. Have to close off the lower vents quite a bit to avoid firing up the wood chunks.

    Guys and gals thanx for all the great ideas. Flash i have a Northern Tool 5 minutes from my office, that is looking like the simplest gas conversion process. And yes the thing is heavy, the original charcoal pan must weight 10# plus. I am looking forward to some kind of test run this weekend charcoal or gas.

    Alot of my other smokers/grill get laid on their sides during tropical storms and such here in Florida. So far the charcoal GOSM can stand on its own.

    gearing up for this weekend. I think i will do a temp test run tomorrow evening using lump charcoal. double check the thermometer on the with boiling water. If all goes well throw on a pork butt on saturday wee hours of the morning of course and see what happens. Again thanks for your input. pics to follow

    the friday test run was rained out, I am not going to complain we needed the rain.

    Finsihed my minor mods this morning starting with a new charcoal bin. Veggie bin and rail from lowes total cost $16.00



    Put some rails on the bottom to help improve draft



    Fitted into old charcoal box this should help with clean up



    New water pan stainless steel from ACE hardware $7.00



    Tested factory door thermometer exactly 212 in boiling water i was shocked.

    Test smoke in progress temps holding a steady 220, with thin blue smoke from the top. I think i am ready for some meat.
     
  14. Looks like you're on the right track for mods. I have the same model that I've modified twice now, the pics can be seen by following the link in my sig. Good find and keep-er-smokin'!
     
  15. I am going to get this "veggie" bin this weekend, that looks like a good idea.
    Are there any other usefull mods that anyone can think of for the gosm?

    smokewatcher great idea on adding the side fire box. how does that affect the weight distribution, does it lean or tip over? Do you need like a jackstand?
     
  17. It does have a tendency to tip if not counter-balanced, but as long as I keep some weight in the food box it's stable enough. I tried doing without the water pan and simply use a concrete step in the bottom, but I went back to using the pan filled with sand.
