First off welcome to SMF wife. Like everyone else here it's a great idea but I would also let your husband pick out his smoker. You'll like it here for there are alot of really good folks here that would just love to help you with just about anything to do with smoking meat. So enjoy and you are in for some really good food very soon.

Welcome To Your (his) new Addiction

GO GATORS

Hey Wife - welcome to the party!

I think it is awesome that you want to gift your hubby with a smoker, and I am going to reiterate a lot of what you have already heard. There are a lot of things you will want to take into consideration one of which is how much do you want to pay for a cooker, and how may do you want to have?? I think a lot of us have more then one cooker as we have progressed in our cooking. I agree with oldschoolbbq - decide on what you think you want and go one size bigger.

Unless he has been talking about a specific cooker, I would let him pick it out. The WSMs are well made, and relatively affordable. Take a look at a lot of signatures and you will see a lot of different cookers listed. It will give you some ideas for what is out there.

The one thing I think a lot of people don't really count on with stick burners is that bbq takes a lot of time - a big hunk of meat can take 12, 14, 18+ hours to cook. If you get something relatively easy to regulate (like a WSM) you can get some sleep - typically not so much with a straight up stick burner. If he's handy he may even want to build a UDS.

Good luck with your and his decission. Don't forget to circle back around and let us know how you made out.

BTW - you said you were the indoor cooker - you may just find this is something you both do together. Used to be Big AL wasn't interested - now he's out there cooking with me - it's a great way to spend time together.

I did it.  I ordered the Weber Smokey Mountain.  Although almost all of you said let him pick his own.... if it was a tool or electronics, I would definitely defer to him.  But he has never even looked into smokers before, so I know it's not something he already has an opinion about.  I'll tell you what - he can join this forum and tell you what he REALLY thinks because by then I will probably not be a regular forum contributor!  ;)

And to Dude... you may not believe this, but my husband HAS actually bought me shoes before without me knowing it.  And not only did they fit, I liked them and still wear them!  Anyway, I'm sure he'll have fun figuring this thing out and experimenting.  And when he's ready to upgrade, I know you all will be there to support him!!

Thanks and I'll let you know what he says... I took so long deciding, now I hope it gets here by 3/31!

PS - I got the WSM on aimtofind.com.  They have a sale running right now that apparently ends tonight or tomorrow - $363 and that includes a cover and free shipping.

It shouldn't be a problem I ordered mine from the same place and it delivered in three days, glad we could help. Have a great Anniversary!

Grats Wife! He will really like the WSM..... and keep in mind that anything you would cook in an ove can be done on a smoker, so don't be afraid to join him out there and put a new spin on old dinners. We have some great smoke mac & cheese recipes here, pizzas, stuffed peppers, you name it somebody here has smoked it... lol.

Wie ,

Congrats on the good decision. Now you have to promise us that you will not start thinking hubby is crazy when he gets hooked and says, wait we have to take pictures for Q View before anyone can eat.

This is a great hobby and can be enjoyed by the whole family. ( both the work and the results).

Very good purchase and congrats to your husband; besides getting a great smoker, he has a very thoughtful wife!

Congrats on a great choice. Happy Anniversary to both of you

He loves it!  He's reading the book right now.  He's excited to spend endless hours on this site looking up recipes and getting tips.  The first thing he said was "now I can make some real Texas bbq!"  I'll tell him to properly introduce himself when he joins the group!

This is great! How many wives are going to go to all this trouble to make their husband this happy. Congrats to you! Your husband is one lucky man!
