i'm fairly new to smoking meats. i'm planning to smoke a portion of a pork loin (about 3 lbs.) on monday as a 4th of july meal. anybody have any suggestions on a good rub for a pork loin or should i not use a rub?

Rub or not -- it's your choice.  I like to keep it simple: salt, pepper, brown sugar, and smoke.  Add a little heat, if you like.  The only other suggestion I would make for such a lean cut is to drape bacon over it so it can self-baste.  You might also want to keep a water pan to prevent drying.

Good Luck!
