Vertical Charcoal Smokers item created by bmudd14474, May 24, 2010
Pros - Easy to use, maintains temperatures for a long period of time
Cons - Steel door built cheaply
If you are looking into smoking meat and want to have quality but not completely empty your wallet, look no further. This smoker is of great size and is easy to setup and use. The steel door is built a little cheaply and you may need to play around with it to get it work. As I have used this more and more, I find it getting easier and easier to use progressing forward.
Pros - Large capacity, easy setup and cleanup, smoking time can be long with minimal effort with a fan controller.
Cons - It wasn't free. Can't move it around easliy. My door has big gaps at the top and I have to push on it hard to seal it.
Believe the hype. It's everything people say it is. If you're looking for a great, easy to use smoker with decent capacity and not too costly from a name you can trust, look no more!
The only problem I faced was the heat control. But, I understand, the more you use this thing, the easier it is to use and control the heat. However, I purchased a computer controlled fan since it seems to make things a whole lot easier controlling the smoking temps, but it's more of a luxury item that increases the convenience of using this smoker. You can do just fine without it.
Pros - Easy to use, maintains consistent heat very well.
Cons - Nit picking here. Weber should install a port to allow temp probes to be inserted into grilling area.
With the WSM 22.5" Weber has made me very popular with my friends and family. While I have always loved to grill I started thinking about smoking about a year and a half ago and pulled the trigger on this smoker almost exactly a year ago. About my only complaint is that I waited so long before doing this. This grill is easy to use, after about 5 smokes it really got consistent holding the heat, and is roomy enough for me to cook for a large group. I have turned out some wonder food, ribs, chicken, prime rib and turkey with this baby and I have to say I have heard "this is the best (insert food here) I have ever had" many times already and nothing brings a smile to my face as quickly as knowing that people enjoy my cooking.
The WSM is an excellent first smoker but I hesitate to limit it as just that. I think it would take a lot for me to ever feel the need to spend more on a smoker. It isn't the cheapest smoker, but I think it is very affordable and like all Weber grills is of a high quality. I quickly zeroed in on the WSM when looking at smokers and really the biggest decision was whether to go with the 18" or the 22.5." Being a guy I figured "bigger is better" and I have yet to have proved that to be wrong.
The only complaint I have is the absence of a port in which to insert temperature probes. This is easily remedied with a quick trip to Home Cheapo to buy a package of lamp nipples (found where they have lamp parts). I selected the shortest one and drilled a hole in the side of the Weber and the "problem" was solved.
I have no qualms recommending this smoker to anyone interested (and have).
Pros - Build Quality, Temp control, Size,
Cons - Size, Lid Therm off temp - Don't trust it.
Mom picked this up for me as a Birthday gift after smoking on a Kettle for quite a awhile I suppose her and Pop thought I needed a proper smoker.
Unboxing this thing is not unlike what I would imagine Indiana Jones and Sallah felt pushing aside the heavy block that hides the Ark of the Covenant.
Folks, This thing is big. I went back and forth on the 22 and 18 inch models and I am highly satisfied with former over the latter. That is both a PRO and a CON. The PROs are obvious. There is no real CON to this thing other than the added cost of fuel and Deliciousness that is to come. You are going to want to use this this and so are others. Fill it up with 4 Large turkeys or 8 - 10 butts. I've pulled some fantastic Turkey off this thing already. Dare I say the Turkey was perfect. If you are going back and forth on the size of the two WSMs, I'd say that Unless it's just YOU and maybe another, Go for the 22. You won;t be sorry.
Value - 5 stars for me. It was a gift. It cost me nothing. It does exactly what I would expect it would do.
Quality - 5 Stars. Weber makes good stuff and this is no exception.
Ease of Use - 5 stars. Start a fire, watch your temps. Its that easy.
Heat control - 4 Stars. Only reason was I had a little bit of a time dialing it in. It was a cold Blustery day at a whopping 19 degrees out on its maiden voyage. I figure things will get better as I get smokes under my belt. I can dial in the kettle with little issue. I expect the same from the WSM as things seal up.
Overall - 5 Stars. This thing can do a lot of meat and with a little time spent with it, It can turn out some fantastic que.
Pros - Easy control temp
Cons - None
I can't say enough about this smoker... Although I have only smoked 1 chicken on it so far, I am very pleased with the performance of the WSM... My only regret... if ya can call it that... is that the 22.5 inch is huge... The charcoal chamber easily holds a full bag of charcoal... a bit of overkill for a 4 pound broiler... I tried to cut the amount in half, but was unable to reach 325 degrees for the chicken... Low and slow, however, the WSM is fantastic... Easy to control temp, and a long burn time for the charcoal... I couldn't be more pleased!
Pros - set up to get smokin
Cons - initial start up to stabilize temp
I got my first (this one) smoker 2 years ago for fathers day from my wife , son and daughter in law. thank god for relatives who read YOUR reviews. I've grilled for 50 years so I ain't no amateur in the backyard but smoking is a bit different horse to ride. After reading the instructions I turned out a smoked pork shoulder to be proud of. I've done turkeys, chicken, chuck rosats.....all with great flavor and perfectly done. I credit good solid equipment.Thank you all for steering my people straight!!!!
This smoker is ridiculous! It can hold more meat than my family could eat in 6 months. Maintaining a constant temperature is as easy as it gets. The water pan is huge and lasts 6+ hours. The flavor provided by regular old blue bag Kingsford and your favorite wood is just incredible.
The only complaint I have is that I love to use it. In fact I've used it so much that I needed to purchase a food saver vacuum sealer. My freezer is well stocked with deliciously smoked meats. Having so much extra really cuts down on the number of times that I can use it.
I'm sure it's smaller brother works just as well. If you are looking for a charcoal burner look no further. It might cost a little more than the average smoker but it's well worth it in my opinion. You will not be sorry!
Pros - Wha can I say that hasn't been said. This thing is fantatstic
Cons - NONE
It may not be a BGE but for the money and ease, who cares. You'll love once you get it.
Pros - Easy to use, from set-up to clean-up, great smoker
Cons - Handles on midsection would be nice
I bought mine 7/10. This is my first smoker and it is making me make it look easy. I have done briskets, ribs, turkey, pork, and sausage ( a Diner, Drive-in and Dives recipe). If you are looking for your first or a new smoker, give this one some thought.
