OK, thanks for the pointer. I don't have apple wood but do have some pecan wood I have been wanting to use. I think this will be a good time for it. I heard woods like hickory or mesquite are too strong for pork.
you realize that when you find the magic formula for getting rid of these little buggers, you will have found the holy grail of ant control (for these ant species).

if you are in there stirring the compost, and if it is possible, try and find the queen, it will be the only one that doens't look like the others, prly a lot bigger than the others also (might be able to find a pic on the internet). That might make them move.
i had a relative that was a health inspetor. to get rid of ants and such in the kitchen (where you can't really use poison) they would use chili powder. Insects (IIRC) breath through their legs (or some crap like that), anyway, it would work for them.

However, when I would open the lid and not move the probe, I would see an immediate drop in the probe's reading because of the heat I let out when opening the lid. The rebar grate I have has a MUCH higher specific heat coefficient than the air...
