if you use the calculator spreadsheet, it will automatically compensate for larger or smaller fireboxes. it will adjust your firebox to smoke tank opening, air inlets and exhaust to work with pretty much whatever size you have.
p.s. as for the configuration, i prefer the look of the top picture.
most metal supply companies have large stocks of remnants available for around 50% of uncut metal. it's pretty much all will call, so you just have to go and see what they have, but if you make up a cut list, you can probably find 1/4 sheets etc that will make up individual pieces at half the...
surprisingly enough, the chrome really doesn't burn off ... i laid some stout beads and had zero issue with the chrome peeling. i'll post a close up pic tomorrow.
you can get that same sheet of steel in ohio for about $85 ... unless of course you got cold rolled instead of hot rolled. (which is what i'm guessing) for future reference, always go for hot rolled steel ... you don't need the tolerances of the cold rolled .. not building a watch after all!
so while it's not nearly as efficient as what i see many of you achieving on your smokers, it's turned out pretty well for something i haven't seen before (the way it's configured). without using the blower at all, i'm holding steady at about 215, and i'm getting about 8 hours out of each bag...
ty ty .. been a blast building it ... even learning from my mistakes has been fun. would have enjoyed it more if it weren't 95 degrees every day, but you can't have everything.

so it turns out i'm a tinkerer .. and i went to a flea market this morning. the results of that combination are shown below.
only tacked up at the moment, but once it's done and repainted, it will look pretty slick.
i put a 2 inch ball valve on the passengers side (which is barely visible in the second picture from the top in the original post) and a plug (shown in pic) on the drivers side to be able to clean out under the RF plate with a pressure washer.
