I wanted to see how the Party Q would do on the UDS.  Lisa Jo from BBQ Guru had told me that the Party Q did not perform well on the UDS in their test...WRONG it works incredibly well.  I suppose they wanted me to upgrade which i might do someday but the PQ does do great so i won't anytime soon.

One thing about the Party Q is that it doesn't have the technology to sense when you're opening the lid to check on the food...but i'll share a trick i learned to bypass this short fall.  Say you're doing ribs and after 3 hours you need to foil the food then what you want to do is ..

1) flip the switch off

2) un plug the probe wire

After foiling do the reverse

1)flip the switch on and the Party Q will  realize there is no probe plugged in

2) plug back in the probe

(By unplugging the probe and plugging it back in it will erase the memory from the cook and won't try to over correct when you turn it back on)

It'll very quickly settle back in at your target temp and stay right there dead on.

How do you know how it worked in their test?

I had called them and asked them about adapters to use on my drum and while i had them on the phone i also asked how the Party Q would do on my UDS.   All that Lisa Jo said was that it didn't do well in their tests on a UDS.

They don't make a lot of  $ on a Party Q and more on the DigiQ and up so i assume they wanted me to upgrade.    It literally keeps it spot on,  if you're doing a all nighter just go to bed because it will take care of the temp!

What size fan are you using?
The Party Q is all one piece so you don't have the choice in the fan size...it's a 5 cfm.  In a drum 5 cfm is more than enough.  It barely bumps the fan at all to keep temp, in fact i hardly saw the fan come on at all after it settles in, on the PQ you'll see the green light come on when it's running.

How much does the PQ cost? I may get one after I get my Big Poppa kit built.
You're going to love the Big Poppa Smoker that's for sure.   Ok, the PartyQ is 129.00 which is the BBQ Guru's lowest end model and the only one that is cord free.  I originally got it for a smoker i since converted to propane and for use on the kettle grill.  It's a great little controller especially for taking on the road but i'm not sure that i'd trust it on an all nighter.  Very rarely i've caught it basically freezing up where it will say it's at the set temp but is still bumping the air( the Maverick ET 732) caught the error....when it ever did that i just shut it off, unplugged the probe and reset it.   That said it does work great on the UDS.

I am getting a second generation pitmaster IQ to try also, the first ones i've seen mostly good reviews with some problems but the new ones it looks like a great product... I'll let you know how it works also.

Thanks, I appreciate the info!
Scottie, i've tested the Pitmaster IQ several times and i'm quite impressed.  If had to suggest between the two i would say get the either but get the Pitmaster 1st. Both are really good but i'll give the edge to the PM, you could even hook battery packs up to it if you had to go portable.

I've been using the PartyQ on me UDS for over a yr. now with zero glitches !

I hooked it up to one of my 1/2' air risers and it has been working excellent .

No more getting up and down to adjust ball valves...............it is truly a set it and forget it deal now.

I like it a lot on over night smokes...add some extra charcoals baste of spritz and go to sleep.

I bring the wireless maverick thermo into my room and when the meat hits the proper temp it sounds off with an alarm .

I wake up foil stick in the cooler cover with a Mexican blanket...............the only blanket I don't care if it gets fubared and got beck to sleep............it's nice waking up to nice fresh Que.

Wrapped with the blanket it will easily hold until lunch.

I LOVE MY PARTYQ AND MY UDS , they are a perfect match for my BBQing style !

Low and slow and stress free !

Thank you BBQ Guru....I love it !

Dan
