After over a month of searching I finally got a line on a couple old fridge/freezers for a build, so I am looking starting to line up parts.  Question I had was where have you guys been getting your stove rope for the door gasket.  Is fiberglass ok to use, I know I want non graphite.

Also has anyone tried using this Silicone Gasket from www.sausagemaker.com instead of stove rope?

I emailed rutlands about getting a 25' roll of 1" fiberglass rope and they emailed me back saying it is not recommended for use around food. So I am still looking too.

My silicone seal cost about 33 bucks for 15 feet.
Would you mind posting a pic of it installed. I am curious about it. I have a 5/8" door gap. Do they have 7/8 or should I go with 1"?

Will be installed tomorrow evening

No problem. It should go smooth. Cutting ends at 45 degree angles to square them up. Running bead if rtv and using masking tape to hold in place as I mount, close the door and wait 24 hours before opening it back up.

That looks pretty nice. I may switch to that if I ever have to replace my rope.
I never really wanted to use the rope, even though that's what I originally bought. I searched around for a while before finding the website I bought this stuff on. It should seal up much better and not let water through. Since i will be leaving the fridge either outside or in outside storage shed, I wanted something that would seal better than the fire rope and I couldn't beat the price.

Good point. Water infiltration is a major pain up here in the PNW. I've had to do most of my smokes just inside the garage to keep the rope from getting wet.

I called them today and they said it is food safe and will handle temps up too 400 degrees.  The only thing they were not sure about was how much it is going to compress.  My door to fridge face gap is 5/8".  Thinking maybe getting the 1" and hoping it smashed dow nenough since there is a air gap inside the middle of the gasket.  Not to get too personal without buying dinner first but what is your door gap and what size did you get? :)  Thanks for the info and pics.  I am going to be getting this for mine

My door gap is just a hair over 1/2 inch. There are two different thped of that gasket. The one i got is called foam rubber. It has air pockets and is much softer so it will compress more even and smooth and give a better seal. So i got 3/4 inch. Like I said, it is very soft so it will compress well. The second picture has the part number and description of what I bought. If i were you I would go with 1 inch because 3/4 is only 1/8th bigger than your 5/8 gap.
