I’m Justin from Michigan.  I live right outside of Ann Arbor. Obviously I’m a huge Michigan fan.  I’m originally from Detroit.  Yes I did manage to make it out.  For whatever reason, my parents refuse to leave.

For years I smoked meat on an awful Brinkmann that we got for Christmass a few years back.  I didn’t know what I didn’t know.  I knew it wasn’t great but having done no research, I had no idea how much better smoking should be until I had good meat at restaurants.  It’s now time to replace the Brinkmann because one of the legs finally rusted off.  That reminds me that I forgot to put that thing out for trash pick up this morning.  I have brand new Masterbuilt XL still in the box next to my front door.  I can’t wait to get it going.  My skill level is pretty low at this point but I do consider myself relatively handy. I will make some mods to the new unit but anything involving welding is out of the question.

I do plan to have someone in my family buy me an AMNPS for Father’s Day from that Todd fellow that everyone raves so much about.  My thermometer will have to come from Amazon because I acquired a free gift card from work.

Long story/short, I’m happy to have found a new board and look forward to using you all as a resource in the future.

to SMF!!! Glad you found us! There is plenty to learn from here and lot's of people to learn from who love to share their experiences. Sounds like you are on your way, Masterbuilt, AMNPS, Therm, you have all the bases covered so far. What kind of Masterbuilt did you get?

You're not an idiot, I am! You did say XL earlier I missed it. I was wondering if you had an electric, charcoal or propane. I saw another thread and see you have propane.

Before you get an AMNPS you might want to do a little research, it wasn't really designed for propane though some have adapted it to work, just a heads up before you get it and it doesn't work properly. Here are some threads you can look through:

You may need to put a oven heat gasket on that door for a better seal. I've read in the past that it's a weak seal that comes with the factory unless that has changed recently.

Welcome aboard from another new Michigan member to another.

We can split the difference because I did respond to your question as if I hadn't answered it in the first post.  Thanks for the link.

Hello Justin and welcome to SMF! Congratulations on the new smoker and hopefully not too many headaches learning the ins and outs of it.

TulsaJeff offers a free smoking basics e-course you might be interested in. You can sign up for it here: http://www.smoking-meat.com/smoking-basics-ecourse.html
SH I was hoping you would post in this thread.  I will be your enemy on Oct 27 when Michigan goes into Lincoln.

Thanks for the link.  I hadn't had the chance to check out everything yet but I will eventually get to everything.
