I was inspired by Boykjo's reverse flow when he posted it last year. A couple years ago I gave a friend an old smoker that I had bought about a decade ago. After he built his UDS he wasn't using it anymore and I told him I would be happy to have it back. Well today we were supposed to work on the big smoker but the rain made that a little tough to do so we worked on modifying the other one to make it into a reverse flow like the big smoker. Mini-Me has been on several wheeling trips like Windrock, Tellico and a few other places. It started off life as a CharBroil offset smoker.

After removing the chimney, we created a template using the old opening to move it to the other side.

Then it got torched out.

Laying out our cuts for the RF plate and the patch for where the chimney used to be.

With the grates back in after welding and some paint.

Then it was time for a seasoning run with some good ol' Nature Glo lump.

Smoke is coming from the right side which is a good sign.

The draft working as hoped for.

Can't wait to cook on it soon. I am hoping to use more wood than lump with it.

Very cool looks great

nice work Joel, I never used a reverse flow, are they naturally hotter towards the end with the fire box?

An offset is, but a reverse flow is designed for fairly even temps across the cooking grates. The smoke and heat has to travel from the firebox all the way to the other side of the smoke chamber before going up and back across the smoke chamber to exit the smoker. The RF plate also heats up and provides convection.

ok I was just wondering due to the fact that the fire was at one end, you would think even tho there is a baffle there that it would still be hotter, but I guess once you get all of that air movin around it and all the steel gets hot it probably evens out pretty good

Thinner metal will have that problem which is why you will see most advise to use 1/4" for the RF plate.

This one is actually fairly thin at 1/8" but the metal was free. What we saw today was temps were within 30* of each other from end to end which is much better than the 100* off it had been. With the big smoker we built, we used 3/8 and it will hold perfectly even temps from one end to the other once it gets up to temp.

Thanks Dave. There is a 4" gap between the RF plate and the far right wall of the smoke chamber.
