I started to burn out my barrel.   Most of the liner burned out, but I am going to do it again to be sure.  I noticed towards the bottom of the barrel (where most of the fire was) the color looks a little pink.  I am not sure if this is what it should look like.  I guess I would like to know what the barrel should look like when the liner is burned out?  If you anyone has pictures, I would appreciate it.  Thank you.

Was it a red liner to begin with? It will just look like clean metal when you get through the liner, you will see the difference. If it was a red liner than your not gonna get it out by burning it.

Our best wishes are with you funk. oh boy I am gonn have to watch my typin with your name, the mods may get after me if I mess up  LOL.

the liner was tan colored.  Thanks for the response.

im not sure how hard the tan liner is to remove, but it has to be better than the red one.
It was not bad at all.  i was worried because I know the red one's are a pain.  I need to gather some wood from the dead trees in the backyard and do another burning tonight.

Funk, so the tan burner will come out with only burning?  No grinding after burning?  I'm only asking because I do have another barrel with a tan liner and just dealt with a red liner can which I ended up getting sandblasted.  Once I get a weber style lid I'll probably build the tan liner can.  But I'm hoping to get a couple unlined cans that I won't have to bother with it! lol

Funk, if you are real worried, try talking to a Sandblaster.I traded a rack of ribs for his work.

Makes things easier and Bartering is fun

Hope this helps and,

The tan did come off with the burning.  I have not done any grinding as of yet.  I did a second burn yesterday and to get some more of the residual stuff off.  I will try to take some pictures tonight and post.  This if my first one, and I am not sure what the inside is supposed to look like.

I am not real worried because I know that it is a food grade barrel.  Being the first time doing this, I just want it to be safe when done.  I think I am going to give it a few more burns, scrap with a wire brush, and wash it with a power washer.

Great, I might have to give this a try with a tanned lined barrel I have..but then I think it's almost worth it for me to get it sandblasted since I've found someone who will do the inside and out for $20.  As for the apperance of the inside, as long as the tan liner is gone, that's all that matters, should just have a dull metal look...well, maybe a little smutted look now from the burning you've done..lol
