Which meat thermometer?

Can you guys suggest me a good meat thermometer? My GMG has one thats integrated into it, but I was playing around with it this weekend and checking temps with a different one and noticed at least a 15 degree discrepancy, so I don't think Im going to trust it.

I would like one that has a remote wireless monitor, but I dont think I necessarily need one that hooks up to my phone. I think I'd rather have a stand-alone one since they seem to be less finicky with connections and stuff like that.

I also dont want to spend a ton of money on one, so try not to suggest me the $80 ones.

Anyone have any experience with this one?

Also, do you suggest I get a little handheld one for testing different areas of the meat quickly? Any suggestions as to a specific model?

I don't have experience with that therm, but it looks nice. I have a Maverick ET-732 that I've used for a few years & would recommend it !

I am not familiar with that therm either.

I too like my igrill2. It is my go to therm. I have a mav 732 that I use sometimes when I need more than 4 probes. I also have a Thermowand from lavatools as my instant read therm. Best $25 bucks a guy can spend. I use it almost everyday when cooking even when I'm not smoking or grilling.

What makes the Mavericks (or Ivations) great? The dual probes? Reliability? Accuracy?

Thinking about pulling the trigger on one!

For the price the maverick 732 is a good value. It's extremely accurate and probably the best selling thermo ever. Seems like everyone has one anyway.

It's reliable and accurate. As far as dual probes that's on just about all thermos now. The igrill 2 and the maverick 735 have 4 probes. That's a real nice feature! Might want to go that route instead of buying another thermo later.

I own a 733, a 735, and an original igrill. I use my igrill the most because I'm use to it. The 733 seems over complicated. I Feel like every time I use it I forget how to use it. The 735 is nice but in the year I've owned it I haven't used it much.

I have the Maverick 732 and it works good for me. I've had it several years and would buy it again. As for instant hand-held, I have the thermowand. It,s very accurate and quick. The thermopop is about the same, but much more money. Both are available on Amazon, along with the Maverick.

I've just been using a couple of Maverick single probes, one for the chamber temp and one for the meat. $19.99@HomeDepot. Works for me. I also don't need anything going to my phone. They vary from each other by as much as 4degrees, though. I did just pick up a remote type so I could check the temps from the garage, though (29.99 @ Home Depot also).
I can't figure out why the door thermometers that come with smokers are so innacurate.
If someone has a recommended replacement for the factory door therms, I'd be really interested...

I've had the ivation branded maverick model for a couple of years now. From a functionality perspective, I love it.

Does anybody have problems with the probes breaking? I have gone through a number of them now. It seems like they need a grip on the end and a cord relief, because the best I can guess it is getting a short when I push them in.

I bought my Maverick 732 on October 7 of 2013 so it's almost 3 years old now. I'm still on the original set of probes but the rubber is completely gone off the meat probe and it's starting to throw LLL errors and show some fraying of the cable where it goes into the probe body. I'll replace it soon but 3 years isn't bad for something that costs ~$15 to replace.

I ordered 2 additional meat probes and an additional grate probe for use with my HeaterMeter. They are a little over a year old and still look brand new. I'm just too lazy to move probes from one therm to the other. I'd rather just buy extras.

Interesting, I see that ivation used different probes than maverick.

This is what mine came with, and I re-ordered (note the curve). Mine never had any rubber grip of any sort.

Maybe I'll order a different set of probes this time.

Go to lowe's and look in the electrical dept. You can find a pack of the rubber shrink tubes in various sizes. They are easy to put on and work very well. I have them on all of my probes. Also, while you are in the elec. dept. look for a 1/2" conduit cable connector. Drill a hole in your CC and install this little fitting. Then, you'll have a port for your probes. This works great for me. Give it a try.

Don't know what probes come with the Ivation versions. Both probes with the Maverick have a rubber boot where the wire goes into the probe. That is what has disintegrated over time on the meat probe.

Thinking about doing the cable connector port mod on my Oklahoma Joe. Right not there is a small gap at the bottom right of the door that I use which works well. If I ever get off my lazy butt and install clamps to really seal the doors I'll do the port mod too.

I run my Maverick wires under the bottom of the door, too, not through a gap but just under the door. I don't have any "gaps". No real desire here to "seal" the door and that little bend in the wire hasn't done any damage yet.

With nomex gasket on both the door and the frame where the door rests, I doubt there would be any damage to my wires (typed wife there...that's a heck of a typo) either but every OKJ Longhorn Combo I've seen has the wire wide gap mine does at the right bottom corner of the smoke chamber so I'm just going with it being thoughtful design on their part.

Since the doors still don't seal up airtight and I'll be installing the clamps anyway, I may just go ahead with the port. Knowing my own OCD it will bug me if I clamp the doors and see a trickle of smoke coming out of that wire slot.
